Spline ??

How do you count splines on something if there's a flat on it?
Have a manual rack and pinion steering, and on the input shaft there's a flat part of it with splines the rest of the way around.
Do I count the splines and use that number to order a u joint?

How to count splines with a flat or interruption.

Count halfway around then double that to get the spline count.

So, 16 splines halfway around gets you 32 total. Easy.

Sometimes it will be in reference books as for instance 20/32. Meaning 20 splines but it is based on a 32 spline count.
