Can anyone tell me what the long term differences between a true Split Air system are vs a PTAC or Mini-Split for garage use (assume heatpump application).

I need a heatpump for my garage weekend or evening use in the winter and summer use (KY). On one hand I can see the split air system, while more costly up front I assume service is easier. Not sure about the ability to service a PTAC or mini split and/or what the long term reliability of them are vs a split air?

Almost all mini-split heat pumps use "inverter" technology (or you should make sure those are the only one you are considering). These are MUCH more efficient than any other type of heat pump, which is why they are so popular. In general they are sized for one outside compressor unit and one inside air handler. You can get ones that have more than 1 air handler. Installation is easier because there is no dict work.

Sometimes you can get a used/rebuilt PTAC cheap and those are certainly easy to install. Not the cheapest to operate.
