Hello all, I'm nearing completion on my garage addition and wanted to share. I believe my project is pretty attainable for average dude since my home is typical construction for a starter home in my area in the $120,000-170,000 range (Omaha, NE prices). The budget for the addition was $15,000 and I should be coming in well under. All of the work with the exception of laying the block and doing the conduit/wiring has been done by myself and friends.
The house is an 1850 sq ft split entry, 4 bed 3 bath. The original garage space was 22x30 which was already a bit deeper than most 2 car garages. I converted it to 22x54. I could sardine in 4 mazda miatas before adding space. Anyhow, I'm always working on cars or other DIY projects and the space original space wasn't cutting it. Especially since this is for both storage and work space simultaneously. Because the garage sits close to my property line, I could not add another bay on the side and had no option but to go back if I wanted more attached space.
The general idea was the build the addition first, then knock out the back wall of the existing garage. Everything went pretty well and the city did help in sizing the beam that runs across the space where the wall used to be. The block was core-filled and re-enforced with rebar to support the beam and section of the house that used to be held up by that wall.

Step 1- Digging out the area behind my existing garage and trenching for footings.
Footings poured and block delivered on Pallets:
Block up, no windows just a back door.
Sill plates installed
Trusses going up. The height of my addition was limited by 2 things; not wanting to bring in an engineer per local code for taller block walls, and not wanting to relocate the window at the peak as seen here.

This is where I am at currenty. Waiting on an inspection for my electrical rough-in before I can insulate and hang up drywall for the ceiling. Once that is done my light fixtures go in and I can start to wrap things up and actually get the place organized. Working on the space while I continue to use it has probably been the biggest challenge. The project itself I took my time planning and building and has gone according to plan, sans a surprise underground power line that we hit because the Utility locating company didn't mark it. Long story short I would have had to replace it regardless.
