Well, i got settled in my new house. It was built in 77 but just went through a renovation so its in pretty good shape.
The panel is fairly old (original) and does not have any room left in it. SO, my electrician is coming over to install a sub panel for my for the attached garage.
I will be needing 1-220 for the welder, 1-220 for the compressor, 1-220 for the plasma cutter (might just use the welder circuit since i wont be plasma cutting and welding at the exact same time
I found out that 1/2 of the house, including the entire garage is on 1 circuit now. When the girlfriend microwaves something, the living room, dining room, kitchen, outside lights and all the garage goes dark. Its only a 15 amp circuit. I know there is way too much load for that circuit so i figured i would split up the entire garage up on its own. Maybe lighting (3-double 8' t8 fixtures) on 1, then all the outlets (4 total) on another then obviously all the 220 on their own.
My question is, is there an easy, legal, way to split up circuit? In other words, and im sure this is illegal, can i unhook the hot in the switch box and cap it, then run a new hot circuit to the switch to run the lights?
The outlets are going to be tricky since i don't know where the start of the home run is. My luck is its one of the outlets in the house.
Id like to keep the house on the main panels circuit then separate all the garage outlets to the sub panels circuit.
Also, the garage has 2 light switches. 1 keyless wall fixture which is likely original to the house and 1 for the ceiling lights. I want to install a furnace in the attic of the garage and use the keyless's power leg to turn the furnace on and off. Once the sub panel is installed, i will run a 15 amp home run to the switch then to the furnace in the attic and abandon the keyless. Is this okay or is there a better way to do this?
