A "spot" lights up a small area. A "flood" spreads the light out. Its all about the reflector.

If you want "daylight", you will need something much stronger than incandescent or fluorescent, unless you are willing to go to a lot more fixtures.

I use florescent CFL floods. They light my entire yard from dusk to dawn, and they run cheap because they don't **** much power.

Yea, I'm thinking of using some high sodium pressure ones and seeing how they do.

I would recommend metal halide lights instead. I hate the color of the light that comes from HPS bulbs. MH is nice, bright, and white.

Yea but the white attracts bugs also. I can get a mh or hps street light in 400w hps is 22 dollars a month and mh is 28.

You can have whatever our next door neighbor has. In the winter then the leaves are off the trees and there is fresh snow on the ground to reflect the light ... we can read the newspaper in our living room with OUR LIGHTS OFF!

Be sensitive to your neighors with the outdoor lights .. especially if they have a hot tub.

Personally, I'm a 'Dark Skies" kinda guy.

I hate lights left on by neighbors all night, for no reason.

I have reasons, my neighbors like to xome through the woods and steal stuff and they are on probation for doing it twice. I have cameras and need lights everywhere now so they leave me alone.......till I cam sell and get out of here...

Not enough power for "daylight", unless you install a dozen of them.

Metal halide or halogen. I've got a twin 500 halogen work light from HF. Boy does it kick out the light. I don't know if it is really up to permanent outside usage.

If you want something durable, you will have to look at commercial fixtures and hold on to your wallet !

Take a look at this link to Lights of America flourescent outdoor lights:

http://www.lightsofamerica.com/en/Categories/Fluorescent/Security/Flood Light.aspx

Several years ago my son took some garbage out around midnight and encountered a shadowy person wearing a dress alongside his Suburban. The person was master'de'bating. Turned out to be his next door neighbor. Next day he installed one of the Lights of America floodlights. His light illuminates an area at least 50x50-feet. It has been on daily from dusk to dawn and is still on the original bulbs. They are sensibly priced, the light color is pleasant and he's had no further encounters with the neighbor.

along the same line, is anyone using led flood lights?

Yep.

Home depot Ecosmart (LSG) PAR38 units. They are more of a spot but they are 125watt equivalent, or so they say. I am happy with them.

They are not direct water exposure (wet) rated. You have to have them covered or installed in a contemporary housing the covers the bulb.

Sad MFG cannot even get the spec page correct. 1000 watt is a 100 watt?

I had those lights of america 9266 65W lights, they were nice and bright but only lasted about 3 years. The housing and mount is made of plastic and it eventually cracked. Cheaply made product. I'm now using this.

it's much better made, metal and glass. light output is about the same. these fluorescent fixtures absolutely blow away the old incandecent flood lights. The output is very even and it lays down a nice flood pattern that will illuminate a large area. not hot spots or dark areas, just nice even light.

x2. The MH light is much whiter. If I needed VERY BRIGHT, I'd probably go with these:

If they are on probation then set them up. Let them steal something of little value and catch them on camera then send to the authorities. If that doesn't work, I would pay them a visit with a piece of my mind (as well as my piece on my side)
Why should you go to all that trouble for a couple of punks. I also wouldn't result to moving because of them.

If the neighborhood is riddled with them than thats a different story.

I'd recommend a lot cheaper solution to your problem, and more stealth.

Treat this like a fox stealing your chickens and you want picture proof to find out what is really going on. Deer hunters have motion sensor cameras that take pictures (unknown to the guilty culprit). Get one of those and disguise it/hide it in brush or fake rock. Don't do the giant lights just yet but just enough to light up culprit in picture ; leave some "candy" out once you get the motion camera all setup. Could try 2nd stage as well with hidden security camera that saves footage over wireless connection to computer.

Get your proof and then go to small claims court with list of all your missing stuff. Wallah, problem solved and your money back paid by culprit!

I've done all that. they have been caught multiple times and they get 1-5 days in jail each time and some times nothing. GA law enforcement *****. I am trying to move. the house is for sale and my two direct neighbors are both trash. The house next to mine sat empty for 2 years and they sold it to a 20 year old that brags about huffing duster and taking pills for 50k when it was a 150k house...:( the other neighbor has been there for 20 years and thinks he owns the circle and can do and say whatever he wants. He has a good relationship with the local cops cause he has lived here enough to know everyone of them and his friend he bought the house from is a local judge...

I am trying to get out as fast as I can and keep as much stuff of mine I can. I work out of town doing oversize load stuff so gone for weeks at a time so can't catch them except with the cameras I have setup. They won't do it when I am home.
