Does anyone have a good tool for spot weld removal? or does anyone have a home made method that works well? I would rather make one if it is cheaper.

Thanks

hahaha yes that is the first piece to the puzzle now how about something other than just a plain old drill bit to remove the spot weld.

Ive see the tools on eastwood but that price is crazy. I know someone has developed their own way to remove them without creating huge holes in both pieces of metal

There is a Spot weld cutter.
Its a Spring loaded "center punch" Arbor with screw on (replaceable) 1/4" round mini holesaws (I guess would be the best way to describe it)
You center punch the spot weld. place this Cutter and cut the outside sheetmetal away from the spotweld.
But each spot weld will have a small 1/4" round section of sheetmetal that needs to be ground away.
Or there is a "step" drill bit that is designed for spotwelds. Mac, Cornwell, Snap-on, matco and even Grainger will carry both.
I've always used the Snap-on spotweld cutter kit with a couple of arbors, replaceable dual sided cutters and a case.
Good luck

On my present project, there's not a single spot weld that's round. I gave up on the spot weld cutter and just went with the step drill. Then I took one of those 8-in-1 painting tools, a type of scraper + blade and just hammer that between the two pieces. Does surprisingly well.

That's what a friend of mine uses. Like a putty knife with a V-notch cut in it. I've used it, works great.

ive just used a a large unibit, so i dont go too deep and damage something else. then ive used a painters tool, or more often i use a peice of scrap 1/8 plate with a single beveled edge and a hammer. works well, but i was removing the quarter panel of my last bronco

I have used many spot weld cutters over the years. The best tool that I have found is the plasma cutter. If you cut your circle fast enough, you can cut through just one layer of metal. Then after the panel is removed, you just grind off the remaining metal. It sounds goofy but it works very well.

I just take a good sharp cold-chisel and go between the two panels and break the weld. MUCH quicker than the spot weld cutter.

I wish I'd have just gone with my gut instinct on that, rather than drop $25 for a fancy spot weld cutter before tossing it back in the drawer and breaking out the chisel.

you can buy spot weld drill bits like monte is showing from Mac tools. If it breaks or gets dull you get it replaced.Mac also has the roto broach and if they break mac will replace them.
