This is ridiculous. How is this supposed to make a difference? Maybe it's just the video, but that doesn't look like it's more than 1/2".

Profoam sells spray foam rigs and training to contractors so i think in that video they’re demonstrating decent application technique and showing how spray applied foam can insulate contours and structures that would be difficult to insulate with fiberglass or others. I can’t say how thick that is but its definitely more than 1/2”. Also no way of knowing if that is a first pass and more to follow. In some parts of the country 1 inch of closed cell has become the norm and what customers will pay for. You can choose how much to install in your building. If that is the final thickness and its an inch or an inch and a half I would say its less effective than 2 or 3 but more effective than 6 inches of fiberglass since it air seals and helps with thermal bridging by hitting the metal supports that would just radiate heat and cold right past any batt.

It is an air seal at the very least. Fairly common up in cold country old leaky houses to have that sand then batt insulation.
One inch is about half the r value of 3.5 inches of fiberglass batt

Did you see how he slowed down when he hit the ceiling?
Video didn't show the foam expanding past 30 seconds...
Video didn't show if anything else was done....
That said, stopping air moving is key.

What is best, original poster is in Texas... Dude, just paint your roof white.

Yeah I live in MN... my Ex-in-laws live in Key West and I have insulated buildings in both climates.

I have a metal 21x22x10 garage I built several years ago. I have no plans of heating it but at some point I plan to do a thin layer of spray foam.
The problem I have is at night it cools down then when the sun comes up it sweats and drips inside.
So this would be prefect.

Mr N,are you saying that if paint the under side of the metal that condensation will not form? I have watch Youtube of a guy in Florida who painted the underside of his roof for patio and saying that it stop condensation

I have not priced out but always wondered if it was expensive to have closed cell sprayed. Maybe one day it will come down to price of batt. Definitely looks easier

Closed foam is a condensation barrier, when thick enough and applied right... So yeah, it will not form.

Depends where and what... but commonly actually the full 3 1/2 and then shave excess off.

Marc

That would be open cell. Closed cell is very difficult to shave. Wouldnt suggest open cell in a 2x4. Thats only R12 which is below code in majority of areas.

I may have been mistaken - In pole building shop we had 2x6 walls filled w OC, and shaved.

A bit overkill for walls maybe, but we got a great deal.

About $1.35 / square foot... 8 months ago, Deep E Texas.

Most bids were more like $1.50 - $2.00

I just had 5" of OC foam put in my 36x60x12 shop.. with no heater in the shop it was 21* outside and 45* inside. The installed price was only about $1400 more than what the builder had budgeted for traditional batt insulation in the walls and the vinyl encapsulated stuff under the roof deck. So far, I'm happy as can be.

On metal building, that light "coat" can significantly reduce NOISE.. so you're not working inside a metal drum. May also have ingredient to deter pests ingress.
