spray foam insulation

I just completed an 20x40 add on to my existing shop.It is all metal and was bought second handed and did not come with insulation.I was looking into the spray foam insulation.Has anyone had experience spraying a metal building with this? Also whats the cost per sq ft.Thanks

Cost varies by region, but you need to use closed cell foam on a metal structure. Open cell can lead to problems with moisture retention on the metal.

I think it is the best insulation you can get.

cost is higher than other options, if your a believer in sealing a building tight its great stuff, maybe a cost effective option for a good sealed up insulation job would be a "thin" layer of spray followed by some kind of glass.

Call your local builders supply they will be able to help with cost per square foot. Give your local supply house a chance to match the big chinese box stores if your a stuff mart kind of shopper...

There are tax credits for insulating now, so that might help defer the cost a little.

I did this exact thing just a few months ago. Here is a link to my thread detailing the build. The pole barn is 32x24x10 and the closed cell foam was just over $3k, that is for 1.5" thick, including the sliding door. The R-factor is something like R-8 per inch or so.

Hope this helps, all I can say, the difference is tremendous, outside it is 100 degrees and inside I am around 65 degrees, unless I keep the doors open for a while.

The tax credits on a garage/shop only qualify if it is attached, at least that is how interpreted it and also the foam installers told me. If it is a business, you might qualify, but you better check the rules carefully.

I did my metal shop with this. 84' x 50' 16' was $25,000 for 2". It is sealed tight, if you start a vehicle in there you can still see the exhaust hanging in the air the next day.

One thing to know: if the sheeting is galvanized you should prime it with a primer for galvanized metal so the foam sticks properly. If the sheeting is colored then you are OK. I used colored sidewall sheeting and galvanized roofing so had to get the roof primed (pressure wash first with degreaser to remove oils). One company said you don't need to prime it, the company I had do it said you should. Knowing how well paint sticks to galvanized metal, I thought it a good idea to prime.

I have it in a portion of my shop and it is very effective. During the installation, the wrong color material somehow was used with another color and I got a nice discount for that as well as paying cash money. Can't ever remember anybody commenting as to why part of the ceiling is yellow while the rest of it is green.
