Ok so I’m having a 30x30x12 metal steel frame installed Monday I have got quotes on spray foam. The guy I wanna go with is recommending 2inch closed cell on walls and 5inch open on the ceiling he has sent me photos of the open cell on the ceiling and I hate it I told him I want closed cell 2 inch on there as well he said he would do it but is not recommending it due to if I have a leak it could be catastrophic. Because I would know about the leak before it was to late how does everyone feel about this I see almost all spray guys do closed cell on ceilings. Am I gonna **** up by doing closed cell?

I don’t like gamble even if odds in my favor, open cell. Well screw I guess back out and I had leak showing up on slab. If I had closed cell I wouldn’t ever notice.
My preference is close cell, for r value and strength. If your confident in your metal roofer(I wasn’t) Close Cell all way.

Open on the ceiling.

My metal roof is probably twenty years old and has several leaks (beyond those that have been repaired).

It would be a disaster by now if it had closed cell foam.

I’ve had a master’s plumbing license for over 35 years. I’ll sometimes go against what some folks recommend when dealing with plumbing. I’m sometimes wrong, can’t quote Plg code chapter & verse, but I have a thorough understanding of plumbing and may be willing to accept some risks to get exactly what I want. I’d never give (plg) advice to someone knowingly having them accept any risks they didn’t thoroughly understand.

If I’m hiring an (hopefully) expert to perform a service I’m not qualified to do, I’ll likely go with what he recommends. I have 2” CC on my walls and 5” OC on the roof in my shop.

All exposed fastener roofs will eventually have a leak.

It might be 10-15 years if the roofers over tightened the screws and compressed the washers too much or it might be 30 years. But all rubber get hard eventually due to oxidation, shrinks, and cracks.

I have personally witnessed horrific damage to a pole barn with closed cell foam due to a small leak and the foam holding the water against the roofing, walls and poles.

I haven’t seen a metal roofing supplier yet that will warranty spray foam against their products.

I voted for closed cell 2 lbs. Density.

But I'm old enough that I'll most likely be dead before any issue would present itself.

The closed cell would give some structural strength lessening the movement and leak potential
