Spray gun compressor question

Hi,

I have a Quincy QT-54 5hp 60 gal compressor. It says it will output 15.2 CFM at 175 PSI. I have been looking at getting a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 HVLP spray gun, but I’m not sure I have the air to run it. The specs say I need 13CFM at 10 PSI. I can’t find what my CFM is at that low pressure. Any help is appreciated.

CFM will slightly increase at lower PSI so you should be fine.

I'm guessing this is for DIY use? Some manufacturers state a CFM rating at 40 psi also, but it is usually only 1-2 cfm higher than the rating @ 90 psi. Also, note Quincy states a 100% duty cycle, where most consumer-grade compressors are 50% duty cycle. Here are the specs. for your compressor.

All I can say is OVERKILL IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO with compressors.. I used to paint a small car back in the 70s with a 1 .5 Sears roll around compressor. Today forget it. All air tools good and bad are air hogs ad paint guns even more so. Add to that the manufactures lie about the numbersso bad Pinocchio would blush. Their usual CFM numbers would make Joe Isuzu blush. The more you got the better. Don’t cut anything too close and you’ll be good.
Equally Important is getting relatively dry air. Try to use metal pie if you can rather than plastic ( condenses more wet air). Run your lines high with at least 1 preferably 2 to catch the droplets marching down the line. Have a drain at each bottom

Also don't forget..in addition to above.. you have a 60 gal tank as a reserve before you start,, and your total gun using time probably is not that long.. together w starts and stops etc.

From what I have read, you will be totally fine unless you are painting 53' semi trailers or similar where you are trying to keep a huggge wet edge.

I bet you couldn’t with a Campbell hausfield 3 hp. Must be some Chinese German company. Remember old Joe Isuzu Mine is 6.5 rice rolling HP and I bet yours will run circles around it. Likely weighs more too. But no one can figure out why..
Had it since 99 and though it’s never been quite up to snuff it just won’t die

Thanks for the help. This is a hobby set up. I may have caught a garage sickness, the family calls this “the contraption”

tikifrei - Very nicely done install - POST your approx Geo location.

I am in TX Gulf coast, spray nitro lacquer regularly, very sensitive to humidity, use a Motor Gard toilet paper roll style filter, and a $20 bowl water seperator, and I'm Golden.

Also that Motor gard works GREAT on a 3/4 hose adapter to push my small pressure pot blaster without caking up wet send at outlet T.

I’m live near Philly, so this time of year we have some humidity. I’m going to be spraying urethane for a WWII Jeep project. I will look into the motor guard filter. I’m not sure where I would tie it in at this point.

Awesome on the Jeep project... I built a 76' CJ5 off of a bare frame 17 yr ago, was my daily driver in TX for 10 yrs.

Use the MG filter AFTER downline all your other stuff, like within the last 10-25' feet before the spraygun.

That, with a little orange filter at the gun, I GARAnTEEE will do you good.

That’s a sweet homemade condenser you have in the background. How much water are you getting out of that. Most of it I would imagine. If it’s not getting nearly all of it you might try rigging one of those wallymart 16 “ fans so it runs when the compressor does blowing on it. They’re cheap and every little bit helps.

Mine is a real 3. Its fine for painting but light for body work unless a guy is deliberate and thrifty although the big tanks help a lot. The blue is a backup/spare and I use the tank. I keep the breaker off.
