A true HVLP spray gun will have higher CFM requirements but operate at a lower psi giving it a higher transfer effenciency.

A conventional (standard) spray gun will typically have lower CFM requirements but operates at a higher psi and has a lower transfer effenciency.

If you have access to a large air compressor with high CFM output then the HVLP gun is the one to use as you will get more paint on the project and have less paint waste. If you only have access to a small air compressor with low CFM output the standard gun would be your best choice.

Hope that helps.....:)
