I've been considering doing that in several places on my houses over the years. I just watched an episode of Holmes on Homes today where he fixes a problem in a house with the spray insulation. Apparently, it shrunk back from the studs/joists and allowed cold air into the cavity enough that caused pipes to freeze. They talked about the foam density being a problem but I wasn't listening close enough so I need to do more research before I try...

Here are some photos of a foam installation. This is a bit of a hi-bred in that we filled the cavities about 1/3 of the way with the closed cell foam and then did what is locally called a "Polar Blanket".

Here is a 2x6 stud space with the foam installed.

Then there is a mesh material stapled over the studs.

Then loose fiberglass or cellulose is blown in to the cavity completely surrounding the wires/pipes etc.

One caution, this completely seals the exterior envelope and will require some form of fresh air exchange. We use HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation) systems that exhaust stale, humid air and bring in fresh air through a heat exchanger to help with heat/cooling loss.

I have used the Tiger Foam DYI kits...my only advise is to have everything clear of the walls. Once you start to spray you have a max of 30-seconds to pause before what is in the sprial tip sets-up and expands. If this happens you have to change the tip. It took me maybe two stud-bays before I became proficient enough to gauge how much to spray without over filling the stud-bay.

If you use the newer stuff it shouldn't shrink after drying. But check what you are getting.
I like it because you can spray back into hard to get spots in corners and such.
There is just enough technique and special equipment needed to do it right that I would hire it out for an entire building.

One thing to consider is, dont plan on pulling wire through a stud wall in the future. If you are planning to use exterior conduit it shouldnt be a problem. If not, i would be sure to spend plenty of time thinking about your possible future electrical needs.
