I threw this together yesterday. I got the idea off this site, which as we all know has an endless supply of ideas. I took a few pictures as I made it so it may help others who would like to build the same thing. I used all scraps and left over materials, pair of hinges, plywood and plastic plumbing or HVAC strapping. I still need to paint it and add a handle and a magnetic catch to keep it closed, but here it is;

You have created alot of storage for a small area that was previously about "worthless."

The only issue I see that you might have is the location of the straps. Since you placed them level, they are back to back when closed, does this create any issue when trying to close the unit ?

The bars look to be recessed.

Good utilization of a dead space. I see space to put a shelf below the cabinet for the jack stands, then you can roll the jack under them. My garage is only 14x20, so believe me I have gotten good at cramming 10 lbs in a 5 lb sack.

Looks great! I use the top of my Craftsman chest (where sockets would go) for my most used spray cans, spray paint and extra stuff is in a file cabinet in the furnace room.

Nice job using scrap materials. Couple of thoughts, though. The straps could have been attached a little lower to the shelves. They would serve the same purpose, but make it a little easier to set the cans in. Also, the part that attaches to the wall probably doesn't really need the straps. There shouldn't be any movement like on the door side.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I like Bad_Idea's suggestion on putting a shelf under it for the jack stands and then rolling the car jack under them. I too am packing 10 lbs of stuff in a 5 lb sack.

I'm going to paint the door black and sides a dark grey. To match my other cabinets shown below. I also have a few old license plates I think I will put on the door.

The straps are in a perfect location, I experimented with them before installing them. The reason I put them on the wall mounted part of the cabinet, besides matching the door side is to keep me from knocking cans down when I grab a can in a hurry or rummaging through them trying to pick one.

Here is a larger picture which includes some of the other cabinets.

On the jackstand/jack storage thought.... I put a thumbscrew on the jack handle bolt so the jack handle is easily removed. The handle is on a hook on the wall while the jack is rolled under my workbench.

I like it a lot. I think I can figure it out but to be sure, what's the dimension from the top of one shelf to the bottom of the one above it?

Thanks everyone.

I made it 48" tall and spaced the top 3 shelves at 10 & 1/2" in between and 13" for the bottom shelf for taller stuff like spray bottles.
I had both metal and plastic strapping on hand, but I chose the plastic because it would give a little and not shred the labels off the cans as I slid them in or out.
I placed the strap 3" up from each shelf.
Someone else on here used dowel rods across. I think the dowel rods look nicer, I just didn't have any.
