What brands/types of spray paint is everyone using?

I have had some very bad experiences lately with Rustoleum and Krylon spray paints. The problem is the very narrow re-coat window. If you recoat outside of the vary narrow ( couple of hours max) window you have to wait several DAYS to recoat or the previous coat will lift and wrinkle.

I have waited over a week and still run into problems with wrinkling.

Reading on the internet this is a fairly common issue with the new "environmentally friendly" formulas. Give me the old paint I used growing up where I could spray a coat in the morning, a second coat that evening, and a final coat the next morning.

Any suggestions?

Believe it or not.... I've had the best luck with color place wal-mart spray paint. 98 cents a can.

I have been using Krylon lately because of the 10 minute dry time. But the last try, the second coat of gloss black became flat and irregular. One coat of gloss and it blended in fine.

I hadn't thought about new formulations, but it could be...

I also have a few cans of Wally World's Color Place.

NAPA brand spray paint is the best,,Sherwin Williams,,both have "spray gun type tip" on them,,,also have more solids and take less paint for the project. You really get what you pay for.

I've had very bad luck with Rustoleum lately and not much better with Krylon. I started questioning my spray painting abilities. But I've recently been using Dupli-Color purchased at auto parts stores and have had great results. Downside is limited color selection and price is a little higher.

duplicolor is the way to go for primed metal. a little info on what you're trying to paint…. right tools for the job, and all.

Same thing here. One year, I built some r/c models with layered paint with no problem. The next year (four years ago), I attempted the same process and nearly ruined the thing with all of the crackle. I called krylon and complained - they said to recoat the second color within a 30 minutes...which is nice, except that I can't mask off wet paint. They then advised me to fog on extremely light coats of the second color...this, of course, leads to massive orange peel and is useless. So, I switched to having paint colors transition at hard body points that I can mask off each coat, or using an automotive paint that you can layer (expensive).

I tried all manner of primers and temperatures and painting techniques and could never layer the colors with any decent results.

I like the Valspar paint sold at Lowes. Dries in a few hours, and you can respray any time.

Their blue is an exact match for old Record vises.

I've been using Dupli-Color paints on all my shop projects lately. They are pricey, but I've always had good results. I use their Self-Etching primer for the bare metal, followed by their Engine Enamel as a top coat.

My problem with Rustoleum is it takes forever to dry. If you have the time, and can use the limited color choices in this line, their "Appliance Epoxy" leaves a very glossy, hard, and durable finish. I'd leave it for at least 24-36 hours before you mess with it.

That is exactly how it is for me....exactly!

I see a number of posts about Krylon as well. I used Krylon in our shop for many years...20+. Then better than a year ago all the techs were up complaining to me that the black would not cover or dry. I tried it myself and they were right. I got ahold of of Krylon asking if they had a bad batch or changed the formula, got lots of talking but no answers. They wanted the numbers off the bottom of the cans.. they sent me 6 replacement cans. None of it was usable either..threw it all away and looked for something else. Dupli-Color was the answer. Krylon certainly changed something, sorry to say it ain't worth a hoot now, was my favorite for years.

Dupli color is definitely better than rustoleum or krylon. I bought 2 cans of the "professional" rustoleum.......complete junk. Leaves fish eyes everywhere and dries to a orange peel finish.

I did get some cheapo stuff at Lowes that seems to work very well. Forgot now what it was called, something like Blue Hawk or some such. I'm using rattle cans mostly for automotive stuff, painting brackets, etc. as i reassemble my truck.

Glad to know I'm the only one who has had issues with Rustoleum. I painted a football helmet a few months ago and it looks like ****. I still think some of it could be my prep work, even though I was very meticulous. I will have to try something new the ext time.

I'm glad to see this thread pop up, just today I was at Napa talking to them about their paint. I've always used Rustoleum, mainly because it whats available or so I thought. About 2 years ago I started a thread regarding Rustoleum and the paint clogging. At the time it was a big problem for me, I would buy 6 cans and 4 out of the 6 would clog, meaning I would use it once, a day later try to use it again and nothing. That tends to get a little costly and was really pissin me off. Anyway's I emailed a link to the thread to rustoleum and the next day had a reply asking me how many bad cans I had. A week later I recieved a check in the mail. Now the problem seems to have mellowed out, except for the Gloss Clear, use it once, thats it, anything after your screwed. I'm wondering if Rustoleum changed the formula to prevent the clogging only to create a whole new problem like the ones your experiencing. I use a lot of Hammered paint so I'm kinda limited to brands like Rustoleum and Krylon.

I like Rustoleum Perfect Touch 2x. Good paint flow and the tip doesn't get clogged. I recoat every 30 minutes. I don't like Duplicolor much anymore because of their awful tips.

I've had issues with Rustoleum paints as well! I thought I just got a couple bad cans. I was going to repaint the cast iron rails for the steps from the house to the sunroom. I had 3 cans Perfect Touch 2x paint. The first can sputtered out after about 10 seconds of use. I tried cleaning the tip (new can) and just could not get it to spray for the life of me. Went on to can two, thinking maybe I didn't shake the first can enough. Shook it for 8+ minutes. That can lasted about 20 seconds. And then I shook the last can even longer and still only got about 20 seconds out of it. I was very disappointed in the product.

Same here. It's what I use and what I used to paint the loader on my garden tractor.

It went on pretty good too for being 10F outside. I was getting bored inside so decided to go ahead and paint it. Didn't think it was gonna do very good but it turned out better than expected.

I buy Aervoe Engine Enamel from my local industrial supply. In my opinion, it outdoes anything sold at HD or Lowe's. It coats better, runs less, and dries harder. No affiliation.....
