Spraying kilz oil based primer with graco

Hey guys I started painting my garage interior today and tried to use my stepfathers graco magnum project painter plus to spray oil base kilz. I used a .515 tip which is the largest tip the sprayer will accept. It was leaving tails bad with the pressure all the way up. I tried it at all the different settings. Has anyone used this sprayer and have had good luck with it. Should I thin the kilz to get a better pattern. I just need some help. Thanks.

I likewise had a terrible time trying to spray KILZ with an HVLP spray. WAY too much paint on the wall, lots of runs after I moved to another section. Ended up having to double back with a roller. Just don't know if I thinned it too much or didn't spray fine enough.

The Kilz specs imply that sprayer should spray it fine at its full pressure (2800psi).
Tip: .015” - .021” Filter: 60 mesh PSI: Fluid pressure of 2,500 - 3,200
Kilz says not to thin.

Is the tip worn?
gun filter clean?
Holding the gun too far from the wall?

If you think its a tip issue, you might try a 417 tip, 8" fan.

You're probably still going to have to backroll to even it out.

I would just roll it by hand and forgo the messy oil based cleanup, not to mention all the oil based overspray. And if you insist on spraying, turn off any gas appliance in your garage, like a water heater.

There's also a roller attachment for the sprayer. That way you don't have to keep dipping the roller. Uses special rollers with holes on the inside.

The sprayer is probably wore out. However Graco tips **** as well. Try a titan 4 13 . Zinser oil primer is also much better. Maybe just the titan tip from Sherwin Williams will work. Don't thin it. Kilz is already thinner Than water unless it has changed over the years.

My guys have sprayed kilz through our Graco novas with no problem, where the walls cold? No need to thin it's pretty thin as it comes.

Yep, sounds like a blown out tip. Also be aware, that running oil based product in a rig used for latex, will often clog the filter. It eats up bits of **** from the pump and line. (although I don't think this your problem right now). Also be aware that latex paint also tends to eat tips compared to lacquer and oil based products. Most pros have a dedicated rig for each type of product.

Yes that is the same sprayer I was using. The sprayer and tip is brand new. I unboxed it and put it together. I think I will just roll it.

The sprayer is brand new. I unboxed it and put it together. The titan tip may work better. However I think I may roll it. The kilz oil primer I used was thick. I used a drill to stir it.

I thought it was too but it was a brand new tip. The filter looked good as well.

50 is to cold for what I would like to paint in, a thin paint would be likely to run in those temps, was the paint that cold too? Was it left in the garage? When we have painted garages I would run tube heaters and bring the paint in the house before we painted, of course turn the heaters off before painting. If it's humid that will play a roll also. I believe 50° is the lowest recommend temp to paint kilz so less than ideal

The paint was probably to cold and did thicken up. Like I said the tip was brand new. I think it was just to cold in the garage and the paint was to cold also.

Yes, that's your problem if you look at your spray lines there heavy at the edges that because the paint is way to thick. And it's thick because it's very cold. Warm the paint inside and make sure you stir before use. One benefit to using a proper paint supplier instead of a big box store is there are paint techs there willing to help. Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore would usually be willing to help with any issues

It will make a huge difference. Spraying a garage is the only way to do it, rolling would be a task. Make sure if your going to be storing the sprayer in a non climate controlled environment to use Graco pump armor or similar. If paint freeze in the sprayer or pump... it will be ruined.

My neighbor and good friend is a professional painter. I had him do the inside of my garage (I help). His method of painting with a sprayer is to use the sprayer to put the product up and follow with back rolling to spread and even the surface. His company never paints with spraying alone like you would on a car. Spraying / rolling uses less product and will give a more satisfying coat.

PS - we used Kiltz let dry 4 days then Benjamin Moore top coat all at 60°~65°
