^ nice. I see those listed on Ebay now and then - the "Master Tech" sets with the gold plating - but sellers want both arms and legs for them!

Sam - I just recently figured that out: almost every socket I own is marked with a part number that reflects the size in 32nds. ie: Thorsen 622 = 11/16" socket. Indestro 1216 = 1/2" socket.
don't know why it took me so long to figure it out. comes in real handy on stuff where I can read the part number but not the size stamped on the socket.
seems to be across the board with manufacturers - at least on almost all the stuff I have here.

Bonney is pretty rare in my area. I might go an entire summer and only see one or two pieces. I was quite surprised to find this ignition wrench set an a yard sale for 4 dollars. I'm not much for collecting, but I am going to hang on to this set.

New arrival to the shop

That is a nice looking box, and it looks like it contains some more goodness :drool:

Nice find on that wrench set, I really like the roll.

I've got a small collection of Bonney ratchets going. I hope to add to it over time.

Nice grouping!

The middle two -702K's are Triangle Tools era styles (post-1967). Most probably post-1977.
Can't help you on the other two - vintage Bonney's aren't my specialty.

Thanks bonneyman. I'm not sure on the the age of the other ratchets either. Those 702K ratchets sure are nice! I'm looking for one in 1/2" drive as well.
I picked this up at the flea market last weekend, B-shield Bonney 3/8" flex head.

Also from the Triangle Tools era I believe?:dunno:

:shocking:

I was doing a little backreading when I ran into this...

I had one of these in my hands today, complete with leatherette roll pouch. Vendor said it had been his dad's...[ ]... Priced $20; he wouldn't take less than $18. That's about twice what I was willing to pay. I have one H12 marked "Zenel," so I know they're out there.

Oh, they're out there all right... Link to earlier post on this thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5322389&postcount=123

Probably never see a complete set in the pouch again, though.

Probably not.

The Bon-E-Con is post 1953 and was the economy line of Bonney tools.

The 707-H might be a Herbrand made ratchet.

I would tend to lean toward pre-Triangle Tools with the B-shield marking. But I'm not 100% sure.

Still, nice tool. The older "economy" line USA tools are usually far superior to modern budget brands. Just like with the old SEARS-brand tools (USA made). For a budget line they were dang nice.

Something old, something new...
Among the DBEs, the bottommost is single offset Zenel (locally procured), then three double offset Zenels (thanks to a fellow GJer in SC).
Going up, two CV single offsets, and then three CV double offsets.
Top is Bonaloy.
The big flare nut is straight, the little one is offset.
My first Zenel tappet, and a lovely 3/8dr rat.

Guys,

I am getting desperate for a Bonney BONALOY 2805 Double Box End (1/2 x 9/16). This is a short DBE with an oval shank and double deep offset. Steel finish, no chrome. S,T,U,V or W date code or no date code. Click on my "Other Needs" Wanted Ad below for photos of the smaller and larger DBE in the 3-wrench set I am looking to complete.

Thanks.

Did you ever resolve this problem? I thought I had a solution, but the date is wrong. I have a CV (P-date:1938?) and a Bonaloy (Y-date:1947?). You probably already had a "filler."

That's what I call a "sweetheart" ratchet (because of the little heart-shape impression). Very smooth, very nice.

Here's some internal shots.

Yes, Bonney was swallowed up by Apex tool in the early 90s and vanished.
Same Apex tool sending every tool making job overseas.

I can attest to the aerospace industry buying Bonney.
I worked in that line of work for 8 years. Everything seemed to be Bonney.
Big, old, heavy wrenches, sockets...you name it, Bonney it was.
I was let go last year and miss it and the tools that went with it.

Makes me wonder what happens to the tools when a facility closes.....

Bonney was closed by Cooper (before APEX) in the early 1990's and the name, patents and trademarks were purchased by Snap On shortly thereafter, in the mid 1990's. I had even had it confirmed by Snappy back then with a simple phone call to them. A simple google search will provide all the info needed......

HJE got a lot of those tools many years ago when they closed. They (HJE) had a huge selection of Bonney back then.....many times bigger than what they have now.

Snap-On didn't buy all the rights to Bonney, but they did get the rights to the Bonney name. Presumably they were going to reintroduce Bonney wrenches but that's speculative at best. They renewed the Bonney trademark in 2008, including in Canada.

They can be tricky since some of the plastic handle variety are identical to some Stanley drivers. I'm not sure if Stanley was making them for Bonney, or the other way around, but the resemblance is unmistakable.
Case in point: this '40s era Stanley driver
UKmB0dQl.jpg

That's a nice stubby driver. Let me know if you want to get rid of it!
There is one other Bonney driver posted in this thread. Post #78 on p4 HERE. A nice wooden handle version.

-0lllll0-
I think I have a clue about the maker. I found a patent number on one Bonney wood handle screw driver - Stanley is the patent holder.
http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?id=43008
Maybe carried over to the plastic handle ones too.

Update: I spotted some wood-handled Stanley screwdrivers from the sweetheart era, that appear to be identical to the Bonneys, right down to the red plastic spacer, except for the handle color is black and the Stanley info is stamped on the steel ferrel...I submit that it would be far simpler for Stanley to omit that stamp to make drivers for Bonney than for Bonney to stamp only Stanley drivers and not their own. The Bonneys are so lightly stamped on the wood, that is often worn to the point you can hardly make it out.
One Stanley was at the Wentzville MO community club flea market, but it was really beat, even for a dollar. The three in the pic below reside at the South County Antique Mall on Tesson Ferry Rd, St. Louis, if anyone has a passion for old Stanleys.

Bonney W06 & W03. The Stanley patent nunber is on the W06. Now that I think on it, the paint resembles the color used on the "Yankee" No.130A made by North Bros. Mine is pre-Stanley, but I bet they kept the color.

Looking for a Bonney LD22-11/16" & LD24-3/4" Deep 1/2" Drive socket to complete a set.

What vintage? I have been building a nickel-plated set from what I take to be first- and second-generation CV sockets. The larger LDs have been ground by a PO, but the LD24 at far right looks pretty good. No LD22 for me yet, either.

Picked up two TuHex combination wrenches yesterday at a thrift store. Early economy-line tools made of alloy steel, but not marked "Bonney." Date codes of FZ (Jun1934) and ES (May1941).
Also an A-series 1/2dr socket, but found a crack in it when I got home:(
Today I did a little research into the mysterious "Krieger" (Bonney) wrenches. There was a Krieger Tool & Mfg Co at 53 W Rudolph Street, Chicago, around the turn of the century. Now the Daley Center sits on that block (since 1963).

Picked up this absolutely perfect Bon-E-Con 3/8" set last weekend.
Found it interesting that the shallow sockets are a mix of 6&12 point. Appears all original and unused.
Any idea if they were mixed like that? Any guesses as to vintage, or if it is complete?

I bought a socket set off of ebay (IIRC) some years ago, and it was shallows of mixed 6 and 12 point. 3/8 thru 9/16 were 6 point, 5/8 up to 3/4 were 12 point. I know Bonney made complete sets of 6 and 12 point - maybe the sets we have were done for budgetary reasons?

Better pics of the ratchet might help vintage estimates.

Lots of the set the the 50s and 60s are like that. SK did it until the 80s I think.

Edit: I also have a new Britain set like that in half inch drive 3/8-9/16 is 6 point.
