Normally I don’t collect Bonney tools, but Username has IDed this stubby screwdriver as being WW2 vintage and GMTK specification correct so it has replaced the unmarked wood handle driver.

Bonneyman, I'm kicking myself as I can't seem to locate it right at the moment, but I'm certain I have the same blade handle with the same Part No. but branded Stanley. Possible?

Definitely possible to find a Stanley 199. They still make them today, but they don't have quite the panache of the older ones. Some people like to hot rod the old ones. (not mine)

Nice Mike! Just as a point of interest, that Stanley looks to be of a newer vintage than the Bonney. The size, shape, blade nose, and model number orientation are different. Not at all unusual since they've been making them forever.

Here are mine (Pic 1), and even though they look identical, they are slightly different too...

Pic 2 is a V17 CV midget Sliding T I picked up this morning at the flea market.

I think that they finally stopped making them around 20 or more years ago because the blades do not retract but are fixed. Makes a person really aware they can really do a slice and dice really easy. I got one of my blade holders that I absolutely hate as you push out the blade and the dang thing has to be held constantly or the blade springs back inside the holder. I finally got so frustrated with it I took all the blades out of it and tossed the remainder of it into my metal recycling.

I personally prefer the fixed blade version. Just have to remember not to put it in your pocket!

Interesting Bonney S-wrench on eBay.
Too rich for my blood but interesting.
Note the Bonney Kidney logo forged in shank, and the stamped Bonney Shield on the head. Some particular transition period I suppose.
(I'm not very tech literate. Maybe someone can capture a picture if wanted to preserve.)

You’re right - that is an important wrench. Some of the early DOEs have the forged-in B-shield on the shank without the embedded-shield stamp on the face. But there’s the stamp with the forged-in jelly-bean. Could be using up earlier (pre-B-shield) forged stock late, adding the stamp.

I like the retractible ones, as long as they’re clean enough to close quickly if they go off course. I do NOT like the folding ones. The blade can get plucked out of them too easily if it gets embedded in what is being cut.

I had a fancy auto loader. Blades kept popping out. Threw it out and went back to the old fixed one.

I like the Bonney except for the fixed blade.
Almost lost my thumb to a fixed blade knife in high school. Think I'm gonna try and come up with a cover or belt sheath that will cover the blade when the tool is not in use.

I have a small collection of vintage utility knives, including the Stanley and Bonney (which I got in a trade with twertsy) I posted above. I don't see many that catch my fancy too often, but when I do, I grab it. Quirky tool to be attracted to, I guess. I have posted some of them in posts #12, 19, 28, and 29 in this GJ thread.

Jeez, that’s a real set, isn’t it - all CU (Mar1929) date codes?
Just missing the 2830. Sorry to say my only extra is a (AW Jan1931) 2826.

OutofBounds,
Are the dimensions of those boards identical?
I notice the checkered one has very evenly-spaced holes; is it pegboard faced to framing?
Are the Bon-E-Cons made from plywood, like the solid-red Bonney, or something else (did they extend “economy-line” to the board material)? I see only the solid-red Bonney has the tacked-on metal trim. Any evidence the others had it removed?

Here the Bonney and Stanley ones I have.

Mikes, I took a second look at that Stanley. Interesting that it has the anti-separation design at the nose, but retains the 199 model number.
I had thought that feature came out in the 1970s or 80s. Does anyone know the sequence of innovations or patents that have gone into utility knives? Or a website that lists them?
Edit - found the Richard Gilbert patents 5005290, 5025558, 6546632. These seem to pertain to that feature, placing its adoption in the 1990s or later, so my original estimate is off by a decade or more, unless the actual design is adopted from a different set of patents.

LesserSon,
The 5 boards are ostensibly identical at 24" wide x 32" high. You are correct about the Checkerboard, it is pressed pegboard over frame. There is no evidence that any of the boards, besides the red one ever featured the metal strapping. I would characterize all 5 boards to be in Very Good condition, with only one of the Bon-E-Con plywood boards showing some very minor deterioration loss on the upper rear corner. The "economy" aspect of these boards is simply that they opted for the 3 thin stripes outlining the board in lieu of the metal trim. I'd be happy to take any additional pictures at your direction. Regards, Tom

Started working on my protective blade cover idea, and took this shot of the internal webbing on the knife.
I noticed that - although the blades themselves have two placement notches cut in them for two different exposure lengths - the knife itself doesn't have the ability to accept the shorter position as cast. I might try dremeling out some of the webbing to allow that, as the shorter blade extension is still plenty long enough for the work I'd do with the knife.

Driving back from LesserDaughter3’s fourth failed attempt to get a PennDOT learner’s permit (she does not do well on tests), I took a small detour and finally got my own photos of the old Bonney plant. It cheered her up a bit, and me even more.

I can't believe nobody has stolen that sign on the fence! I'm going to have to make a midnight run. (And if it's gone when I get there, there're only TWO guys on this thread who are in a position to beat me to the punch - or shall I say snip! - and I know who you are, so don't even think about it!)

Here's a Bonney address "sign" I just picked up on Friday. Anybody want to guess what tool it's on? Hint: We've seen exactly one of them here before.
