Spring loaded pliers/cutters storage

I’m putting all my pliers, dikes, etc vertically in my tool chest, but since it’s not my tallest drawer I’m at a loss of what to do for all the spring loaded ones. Aside from rubber banding them shut is there a product that holds these shut for storage? In my head I’m thinking of something like thisea6685e639cea844105b670ae0d80053.jpg

Most of my spring loaded pliers have a lock of some sort. It could be a built in lever or a piece of metal like a bent up paper clip that holds the jaws together for storage. On my adjustable snap ring pliers, I took the springs out and put them in the small plastic box that hold the interchangeable tips. It only take a few seconds to pull them out of the box and put them in the pliers.

How about something like this? They are made of rubber-coated flexible metal and they stay bent when you bend them. They come in a wide variety of sizes and colors.

The one pair of mine that didn't fit when I converted to vertical storage were the long reach 16" needle nose pliers on the far left. I zip tied them closed around the tips and it simply slides on and off the taper when I want to use them. 88ebec43c4152299f20cbbbe2c00b670.jpg

I just use Velcro straps. You can get a whole roll of them for like $5 at home depot.

If they open too wide to go in a pliers rack in a deep drawer then I've just found a place to lay them down flat. Yeah, that takes up a lot of room but I tried using some neoprene/silicone? wrist bands once which worked well, up and until the band came off one somehow in the closed drawer to where the fully opened pliers were preventing me from opening said drawer. Didn't take too long to figure out what the deal was and get it open but it was enough I decided then and there that wasn't going to work for me.

I also just didn't like putting the bands on and off, plus I wondered if long-term storage with the spring compressed wouldn't help prematurely wear it out.

For this I make rubber bands by cutting up old bicycle tire tubes. They are strong and last forever (unlike store-bought rubber bands).

I take key rings and hook 3 of them together and loop one over
each handle to hold them together.

Thanks for the idea, guys. I have a pair of Klein 2000 series ironworker's pliers, and some zipties, now there is room for another pair! That is my only complaint of the pliers, bc Klein even has the HD forged strippers, spring-loaded with a lock. And I love the lock on my Irwin/nws ergo multi.

IAlso look at those double ended elastic ties, that little girls use in their hair.

Hmmm - this gave me an idea. My wife tends to leave her ponytail holders (glorified rubber bands) around the house - I think a few of those are going to make their way into my toolbox.

I used rubber bands at one point then I used hair ties. They seem to last longer then rubber bands and works good on other items too.

Single Strand wire cut from Romex.
Bends and molds to fit.
Easy,
one size fits all
No doubling the scrunchie on small tools
No rubber band breaking with age.

This is easiest for me.

I just use the large thick rubber bands that I find on the broccoli we bring home from the store. Got several spares in the tool drawer and they last a long time.
