I have been lurking in the various threads regarding breaker panels, as the house I just purchased was in need of replacement. Thanks for everyone's insight and input. In the end I opted to replace it myself (hired a L/B electrician) instead of pushing back on the Sellers. $1500 out of pocket, but I now have something I won't have to replace in the next few years. I ended up opting to go with a new SD QO 40 slot (room for expansion) and upgraded service to the house to 200A (up from 100A). New ground rods were installed (there wasn't any in place to begin with) along w/ a new meter & housing.

I prefer Square D QO line whenever possible, but if cost is an issue to someone, Murray/Siemens are pretty decent for household electrical system.

I just put a QO panel in
Got it from Lowe's for $150 with a five breakers. That gives me a 200 amp panel with 30 spaces but i can put 10 tandem breakers in for a total of 40.
