What am I missing here?

Panel has the holes for a square D type A hub, but they aren't threaded. Trying to self tap strips the screws.

Can't find any install instructions or screw specs.

Well I finally found that they are 12-24 screws.

Of course I don't have a tap.

I always squeeze silicone of bottom side of those hub adaptors before screwing them down on top of meter socket.
And rector seal Tplus2 on threads of hub before screwing them in,I don't care if they say they're water proof or not.

Good to know, sort of planned some sealant anyway.

Nobody taps them. The screws will cut their own threads. You do need to put some downward pressure on the screw or it tends to strip the threads off.

I've never had any trouble running the screws in. They cut the threads pretty easily, just like panel screws.
Well I had tried light by hand, realized the box wasn't threaded and then leaned on the impact and tried again. I'm left with a stripped mess on 1 of 4 screws.

Can I throw a normal 12-24 machine screw in?

Maybe I'll give it a go on another screw....

I don't know if it would cut the threads. You could use a SQD screw to tap the hole, then install the odd ball. Put it in the back so it's less noticeable and make sure to cut it so it's no longer than what came with the meter setting.

I wish I could grab a pic of the SQD screw (they're inside the panel and it's dumping rain), I really don't see how they'd cut threads, there's nothing special about them. Wonder if a bad batch existed?

Edit: I expected the screws to have the little cutting notch:

Instead the just have a little bit of a pilot/dog point.

I think I'll grab some 5/8" long screws and a tap tomorrow. If I can get threads start I can return the tap....

If you have harbor freight nearby, these are worth their weight in gold. I can't tell the difference between these and the Greelee set I paid 3X more for. An electrical supply house would probably have the Greenlees in individuals.

I saw a Milwaukee set at home Depot for $36. I think I have all the other sizes already so I'll probably either borrow or buy a single tap for $10 tomorrow.

3rd or 4th trip to store this week. Not doing this type of stuff everyday it's easy to overlook dump things and buy the wrong fitting/scrap something and run out. Also the home Depot here *****, so oftentimes trying to piece things together.

The electric supply house likely has everything I could need, but I can't look at inventory online, and unless I run to town when they open at 7am they're closed when I get out of work. I went down yesterday to order wire (they didn't have 2/0 and had to transfer it) and then this morning to pick everything up.

This project is burning me out

Turned out the Square D screws are ****:

Bottom one is what I tried last night with impact. Middle is what I tried tonight, with pretty heavy force behind a drill. Started stripping immediately.

I remembered this morning I had an extra hub (millbank) and the screws are the same size. These were actually marked self tapping, and you can clearly see a tri-lobe lead in. The screw on top starts immediately and cut threads no problem.

I hadn't seen those but I haven't been in a HF for 3+ years. I think I'll get them just because. I don't know why. Work has slowed to nothing whatsoever. I think antique dealers are in a crunch.

I bought these initially to add grd bars in existing older panels. These on the end of a bit extension are awesome to get in between the wires. I drill the top hole for the grd bar and then install it. Then drill bottom hole using grd bar as template. Done in 2 mins. I even use tap oil!
