fflinstone... thanks for the link. I wonder how these Sears Craftsman 8 points that sell for $3.00 per socket compare to the other Sears Craftsman 8 points that sell for $1.00 a socket on eBay? Is the difference in the socket, or in the location where sold?

Grey's Pneumatic makes what you want, 4 point 1/2 drive socket set - 1/4" to 5/8" by 16ths with the 9/32 thrown in too. They also have 8 point sets in both deep and shallow, 1/2" to 1 1/8" by 16ths

Today I used one of my garage sale-found 7/16 8-point sockets to install a brass pipe plug that had a square head. It worked fine.

Almost all the torque on a square head is transferred at the tips of the square. An 8-point socket engages almost all of this area.

I just checked my sockets to make sure, but Sears Craftsman does (or at least did at one time) carry a 7/16" 8 point socket in both 3/8 drive and 1/2 drive sizes.

Engineer 61... thank you for expanding the list of choices! Pneumatic rated sockets might be more durable to blip off stubborn pipe plugs with an impact gun.

Provincial... Thank you for your input on where the torque is applied on a square nut. I was in fact just debating the merits of 4 point versus 8 point and wondered about this.

Jim C... I had three small sockets in 1/4" drive that are 8 point. I don't think they are Craftsman though. They were included pieces as part of a cheap socket set. If you need a photo, I'll be happy to take one for you, but again, they are not Craftsman.

Yeah, I agree that 1/4" drive 8 point sockets exist, I've just never seen any that were branded as Sears Craftsman products. If there are Craftsman 1/4" drive 8 point sockets, I'd like to pick up a set. Point me in the right direction.

Well, you made me look, and it turns out I was mistaken.
My 3/8" and 1/2" drive 8 point sockets are Craftsman. My 1/4" drive are Snap On.

Thanks for looking. I just could not recall ever seeing a 1/4" drive 8 point set that was Craftsman branded. If they had been Craftsman, they'd be on my "quest to find" list and I'd be asking you for a couple pictures. Thanks again for checking.

Interesting set the Sunex 8pc 1/2 impact with the sq male sockets. Price beats the same set sold elsewhere too like ACME and CPO.

I don't know how useful smaller size n that Gray set would be to me though.

I have 6 different 8 point chromed sockets 4 smaller ones 3/8", 7/16" 1/2", and 9 /16" are Craftsman and the next two larger ones are Blackhawks. I found those two for less than a $1.50 a piece in a box of loose sockets at a flea mkt.

They are all 1/2" drive except the smallest Craftsman that is a 3/8" drive.

I think now maybe only onetime did I need a male sq. socket to pull a drain plug :

They're male plugs and they're waaaay down at the bottom of the skimmers and getting to them with a set of Channellocks is a PIA. I've never seen a pipe plug socket big enough. Not sure how big the plug is, probably 1-1/4" or so. I'd look, but it's cold outside and the skimmers are under six inches of snow.

Anybody ever see such an animal?

Ah ha! A bit of searching revealed that the tool I'm looking for is what plumbers call a "clean out plug socket". Rather spendy, but looking at them it occurred to me that I just need to get a length of square tubing that fits (or can be made to fit) and a good sized Crescent wrench.

Just recently at work I had to remove a 3" cleanout plug from a drain pipe within a metal structure with about a 6" x 4" access cover. Basically, I hooked an offset pipe wrench on the square drive and used another pipe wrench to turn the offset one. It destroyed the offset wrenches handle, but eventually got the job done. Ingenuity at its finest.

If you were looking for small 1/4" drive 8-point sockets - 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 - they're all over Ebay and you shouldn't have to pay more than about two bucks per socket (including shipping.) They do NOT sell, except to nutty collectors like me who buy them to complete sets.

Coincidentally, I just received a partial 1/4" drive set that contains (believe it or not - I had to clean my glasses and dig out a magnifying glass to make sure) a 9/32" 8-point. Not a damn clue what it's for, but I own one now.

If I hit any more later I'll post them here as well. In the meantime, that Craftsman =V= set is as good as you're going to get (quality wise) and should serve your immediate needs. Personally I think that Proto set is overpriced - you could always try beating the guy down if you want all those sizes. Looks like he just listed it, so he might not budge. Good seller - I've dealt with him many times.

I have 1/2" & 1/4" drive Snap on 8 point sockets. Also 3/8" drive Williams 8 point sockets except for the 9/32" which is single square. That fits a 1/8" pipe plug.

The only question now is, which set is the most solid, and most complete. I'd prefer the heavier 1/2" drive, not 3/8".

I have a vintage 7/16" Bonney double-square in 1/2" drive for the cost of shipping if you'd like it. Single socket, not a set.
