Shoot 'em all you want. Bury all the chicken wire you can. Won't make a difference. Get your shed up higher off the ground. When it doesn't offer "line of sight" protection from predators anymore, they'll stop digging under there.

Actually, it's worked great.

I am reminded of those old lyrics “Fish Gotta Swim, Birds Gotta Fly”. I think you are going to have Squirrels until Something worse comes around.

We had that problem in spades. Here in AZ, it is the round-tailed ground squirrel. They're small, look and act like miniature prairie dogs, and they dig an underground city, so you can step on what is apparently solid ground and your leg sinks in, leading to sprained ankles. Our property is 6 acres and was overrun with them.

Then, along came Huck. Huck was a GSD rescue who was 50% GSD, and we believe Husky or some other Northern breed in the other half, based on the shape of his head, miscolored eye, and feet. Huck was big, about 130lbs. Huck took it as his personal responsibility to rid the property of the little devils, and he did. He pursued them relentlessly, digging out their burrows, until by the end of the first summer, there was not a one to be seen. Huck was with us a few years, but sadly passed away last year. This past summer, still no more ground squirrels. I guess he left a lasting impression. :)

I went to war against the squirrels several times as I'm a slow learner. I finally realized that you can't win. Not only do the squirrels badly outnumber you from the start, but they also have unlimited troops available in reserve waiting to move up to the front line as needed.

The best you can hope for is to keep them out of one area that you are willing to be eternally vigilant over. But of course while you are doing that they will be attacking your flank. It's a numbers game and they have an insurmountable advantage.

This is what I'm slowly learning. For me it might be best to just try and squirrel-proof the top of the house. It ***** that I have a damn walnut tree 25' from my house. Why would anyone plant the damn thing in the first place? I've considered hanging a few tube traps on it.

Picking them off one by one has other prices too. For me it was Sunday morning before I cleared my head with coffee and replaced my ****** glasses with contacts. I saw one out by the tree and figured I'd pick him off through the door I just installed last year, so I popped out the screen and...Well, a picture will explain it better...

For what that will cost I could bought a few tube traps.
