i have never tried to over volt a variac but i wouldn't try it. my bet is the insulation on the primary will burn up.

It's an auto transformer with a variable tap. Only one hot leg in. Might be able to veto the other end of the winding but not sure what you would get out on the variable tap. Get the right one if you want to use 240. Also as volts go up, amps go down.

Like the title says I have a Staco variac and it is rated 120V input, 0-140V output, 50AMP, 7.0kva. Seems to be built pretty stout. I was wondering if I can use it with 240V input as long as the output current doesn't exceed 25AMP? Or does it not work that way.

NO! You can't double the voltage on the primary! The core would saturate, winding current will skyrocket, and you'll let the magic smoke out.

Look up your model no. here ! 240vac may be a possibility . it appears to be a double unit. to get to 7kw

they don't show a model 5010. if its a double unit it can be wired to use 240vac
