Staining a weathered fence

So I bought a house last summer and the previous owners didn't believe in yard work. The house itself was well taken care of, but the lawn fence and deck are a mess. The fence is a well weathered panel fence, but is still structurally sound minus a couple specific panels which I will replace. Anyway my plan was to pressure wash the fence, rather than go through the tedious task of sanding it, then apply a solid stain. I would like to know if there is anything wrong with this idea. Also, which stains people have had good luck with. Menard's is my closest home improvement store, but I also have a Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, and Lowes within a reasonable distance.
Note: I am more interested in making the fence last than making it look good since our dog often roams the backyard unsupervised.

Look for uv resistance in your stain. Generally more solids better protection. I went with sherwin williams out of convenience. Lowes and Home Depot are thirty minutes away.

Get a good brand of exterior stain and the airless sprayer to apply it.

Just dealing with a deck that has a couple layers of solid color stain. It was peeling pretty bad, was instructed to strip it. Not going back to solid color. I know a fence is a lot better because it's vertical. Just my 2 cents.

Before I had everything redone with Azek, I used to use Sikkens Cetol SRD. This lasted the longest of anything else I used.

Thanks for all the replies. The 40% off sale at Sherwin Williams has me intrigued. How often do they run that sale? An airless sprayer will probably work for my side of the fence. However, my neighbor has a garden along the fence, and I don't want to get stain on her flowers. Would a roller work for that side of the fence or should I just drape plastic over the garden while I spray?

How critical is it for you to have the fence? Not having one might make your yard feel bigger, and you wouldn't have the ongoing maintenance.

I agree - we moved into a house with a split rail fence for dog containment. I offered the entire fence free on Craigslist and with no effort it was gone. Yard is larger feeling, easier to cut the grass.

I do need some sort of fence to keep my dog in especially since we live on a busy street, and I like the , already built, feature of the current fence. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I think it runs 3-4 times a year, typically in the spring/summer

And for us, they keep the bears out of our backyard.

Oh yeah, I used Wood RX from Home Despot several years ago and it's holding up great so far.
