All the hardiplank I have installed over the past few years has been purchased pre finished. Personally, I would not stain it since the longevity of the product depends somewhat on the film building capabilities of the finish appllied to it. Go to the James Hardie web site and get the straight skinny on the correct finishing options for your product.
