I need to stain a toy box, but am concerned with the flammable vapors and my small torpedo heater. its cold out so i need heat. With open rafters and gable vents do i need to worry about the vapors flaring up?

The stain is oil based polyshades by Minwax

I could stain in my basement but i would have the same issues. What do you guys think?

I do it all the time. Haven't blown up yet. I do open the garage door every half hour to vent. I am not sure if the vapors would be a flammability issue as much as a breathing hazard.

Waterbase Stain?

Not such a good idea in a garage that can get below freezing (and I'm not a fan of waterbased stain for numerous other reasons too).

I too would be concerned with breathing too much of the fumes. Oil based stain is flammable, but the vapors from staining are not likely to ignite.
The rags from staining are a totally different story though.
