Stainless Work Surface- Top Only?

I am looking for a stainless work surface but NOT the whole bench, just the top.

I have a suitable work bench with plywood top just want to add on top of what I have with a stainless steel surface. Taking the bench somewhere seems impractical and I can't do it myself.

Ideally it would be a 3/4 plywood with the top and 3 edges wrapped in a reasonably heavy gauge stainless. 72-73" wide, 2-3 feet deep and perhaps 3 sided back-splash but that part is optional.

Besides a custom kitchen maker any other ideas?

Would an epoxy coating work?

Just to butter y'all up- this place rocks for this kind of advice.

Source the stainless piece and find someone with a brake to bend the edges/back splash. You could bend it yourself by bending/forming it off a nice solid edge.

A kitchen design place would charge way to much. Go to any steel fabrication shop and they can sell you stainless by the square foot and they can bend it any way you want for edges or backsplash. Then if you like take a DA with 120 grit and go over the whole thing which will give it a nice finish and help hide any marring or scratches. The best part about that is you can just re-DA it anytime you want which will renew the finish hiding any marring and surface scratches from working on the bench.

Stainless Top Work Bench?? I was looking at them the other day. I know for sure they had the Maple top version 72"x30" there Saturday for $199.00. Sometimes they move stuff around depending on the season...

Just an update. I found this site I couldn't seem to find before. Actually saw the name from the Sears site!!!

http://www.benchdepot.com/

If they are willing to sell me a top only this looks like a good choice

Yo. 24x48 galvanized top bench $361. To compare, I have a 24x48" Craftsman bench with a thick MDF top. I went to a sheet metal shop and had a galvanized top bent to specs - wrap around, no back splash- for $30. Total investment in bench - $130.

>I tried searching and came up empty. Do you know what they call it?
Searching Sams web site is the most useless thing I've ever tried on the web. Their search is abysmal.

Glad I could help. Been on the receiving end here so feels right to contribute.

Did you call them because I sent an email earlier and no reply yet?

Thanks for everyone's advice. I ended up with a Sears top. Good discount

Savings were good enough I could get one for the other bench.

How did/will you fasten them to your benches? I am going to use two 24" deep Cole Steel cabinets as a base. I would rather not have to drill through the corners or edges of the top surface down into the cabinets if I have an alternative.

What is the wood core? Particle board? Thanks.

I just ordered them last night. Shipping to local store. Says 10-14 days but I hope it doesn't take that long.

I'll post my impressions when I get it installed.

I am "planning" on either brackets underneath or leave some of current surface and screw UP into bottom of new top.

I was contemplating a vise now and drilling holes in the NEW surface!!!:drunk:

Thanks. I guess if I remove the top two or three drawers I could reach into the cabinets and drill and screw up into the bottom of the new top. I'll be curious what kind of wood you find in the core. Please keep us updated.
