Hi,
I'm building a 32 x 44 with 8/12 pitch. I'm limited to 10'-8" walls. I may be able to push them a little higher but not above 11'.

If I need the height, I plan to use 16 feet of scissor truss in the back end and rest attic trusses.

If I use scissor trusses I'm struggling with how to and where to put stairs to loft so as not to disrupt too much floor space. I have seen the examples here with the stairs half way along a long wall. After living with them is there anything that you would do different?

I have even thought of putting attic in back of garage so I could put stairs on back wall but that has other draw backs.

I have also thought of a cat walk from back wall to the attic space but that interfere with the additional height.

Again, anyone out there living with them and would do something different or the same again? I want permanent stairs as attic may become a man cave?

I'm doing a 36x40x12 71/2 pitch built into a banking. I am going to have a exterior stairway in back with landing and 36" man door for access to second floor that will be 12x40x8. I don't want to lose any floor space in garage.

Hope to soon finish a 32x40x12 with gambrel roof on scissor trusses. The 42" wide stairs go up 12 steps to a landing then a turn of 180 to seven more to the second floor. I needed space for a bathroom and utility area, they are under the landing and long flight of stairs. The first flight is along an end wall, the landing along a side wall. The scissors trusses land on the plate about eye level at the platform but they are near vertical at that point. I'll see if I can get a photo or two tomorrow.

I recently built a 30 x 40 with 8/12 pitch roof with similiar attic truss/cathedral truss combination. The ceiling under the attic trusses are 12', with the back half open to the peak. While the stairs do take up some floor space, I plan on utilizing that space for a compressor room (so its not wasted space). Click on my build link to see some photos of how I laid mine out.....

How hard or $$ would it be to add a dormer or something like it so that stairs could go up along the side of the long garage wall or at least go up 6-8" before making a 90 degree turn?
