I'm building my stair stringers (15ft long) right now and was wondering about perpendicular bracing going up between the stringers. The steps and risers will be Trex. Let me know what you think. thx matt

Depends.

How wide?

What are you using for the stringers?

What usage?

And remember that Trex is NOT structural and has a closer support joist spacing than solid wood decking boards.

And just how are you supporting the treads and risers in/on the stringers? You won't be doing housed treads and risers with Trex.

So, like I said, it depends.

Yes brace the heck out of it. As said trex needs different spacing. Find manufacturers instructions. The cross bracing can be used to support the trex as well. Good thing is you can always add more later. That long I’d add a landing or support post half way

I did 16” OC and the outside stringers get a brace on the tread to the middle stringer, at every tread. In between the middle two stringers I put a riser brace at every riser. Then on the bottoms I run a few the same way so the stringers can’t roll, but the are parallel to the bottom of the stringer.

Since that’s as clear as mud I can probably take a picture tomorrow.

My stairs are approx. 36" wide. 4 - stringers 9" on center. I read somewhere that Trex steps require a 9" center. I'm going to tie them together at the bottom step across the front. Do you think that if I put perpendicular boards (2 sets) between the top and bottom it will help? thx matt

A good general practice is cutting identical size blocking and putting between stringers. Make the same size as stringer so they don’t stick out the bottom. This keeps the stringers straight and firm. Also nail a board at a 45 degree angle to the bottom of the stringers on the flat. This keeps it from racking.
As I said earlier add support to ground halfway up.

Thx Kaisen, I will brace so it won't rack. Wish I could put a support in but then my trailer won't fit. Hard to have extra room on a 50' wide lot :)
thx matt
