Staircase cubby boxes - Help needed

I'm thinking about building a platform to shelve random items and keep the floor below uncluttered.
I've seen these cubby boxes idea all over the place and really like the concept/design of it.

I'm fairly new to all of the wood construction and would like to know how can these be built easily yet support the weight of an adult going up and down.

Example of what I'm talking about (doesn't need to be fancy)

Ideas/DIY/tips to recreate something similar would be great, while keeping the steps usable

I would build the stairway with the standard stringer method and then build the cubbies to just slide in under them. The pic is just for reference so you can see what I am talking about.

I kind of like the way those stairs are made. I can imagine it takes a bit of thinking to make sure you get the stairs just right, but once you do, the stairs and the storage spaces will look really nice.

Yup I've thought about building the stairs first then the boxes, but I do like the idea of an 'all -in-one' setup.

Keep the ideas coming :D

Build your stairs and build the shelves separate. Put them on casters so they can be rolled out to gain access to the storage behind them. I can see a lot of seldom used stuff stored behind that narrow facade. :)

Hi. Just one little note about the sketch provided. I am a contractor, and I always make sure the end of the stringers never touch the concrete pad, as water will wick up the stringer....you could either run the pt blocks across the whole base, or even use a strip of tar paper between the concrete pad and the stringer.

Also, if you need a hand figuring out the stringer to fit your space, post the height you have and the length you have to fit it in, and I can help you size out the stringer

how do you get by without handrails?

Although your question has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's original post, I will have you know people without arms can't use them. I guess that's something you will need to figure out for yourself...

actually it does have alot to do with things
handrails arent just for hands but to also prevent falls.
Building codes address such things as hand rails and landings
for anything over 32 inches high. Just thought it might be worth
including in the design

Moot point bud. The OP's original pic is just a reference from another site. Not his design. He just wanted to show us what he was thinking about, cubbies under the stairs.
I am just trying to keep the thread on point. Handrails are not the concern here so let's not worry about them...

I have a space under my stairs also. Mine is not accessible from the side so I'm thinking a long platform on casters that I can roll out when needed. I would store stuff under the stairs that is infrequently used. 'Course, I have had an obsession with putting everything on wheels in my shop for a while now, so...

Not a bad thing, Jim. The only things in my shop not on casters are the mill and one solid mounted bench. Everything else rolls around, even the hydraulic press and the compressor...

Thanks again for everyone's help/input - Lots of things to consider and I like the caster idea, could make for hidden storage.
