So I am finally getting the floor poured in my pole barn (2 years later) this monday and im already building the staircase in my head that will lead to the upstairs loft.
it will be in the back corner and I want to figure out how to make the upper and lower rise/run the same while making the landing as close to 36"x 36" as possible. Here is what i've got figured out so far...

Total height: 130.75"
Total stairs: 130.75"/7=18.6 (rounded down to 18 for less stairs and to bring riser height up a little)
18 stairs/130.75" total height=7.26" exact riser height

Now the tricky part...

I have a total of 167" from where staircase starts to hitting the wall. Subtract about 36" for a landing so now about 131". I prefer a 10" deep run (using 2-2x6's for treads and would make 1" nose on the stair). So take 13 steps at 10" and i've got my 130" length I wanted.
Now, I need to determine the exact landing height. 13 steps x 7.26" riser height=94.38". Subtract that number from overall height 130.75"-94.38"=36.37" total landing height.

The landing counts as a step, right? When I take the landing height and divide it from the riser height it leads me to believe I still need 5 more steps. My calculation says I need 18 total.

Do I cut and additional 1.5" inches out of the rise of the stringer so that it makes up for the 2x6 tread height?

How many stringers should I use? I figured 3 to be on the safe side? left, right and middle

Sorry for the lengthy post hopefully whoever reads this made it to the bottom without falling asleep or suffering from a slight migrane from the math...

13 treads -> 14 risers (think about it - if you have a stair with only 1 tread there are 2 risers).
So your landing should be 7.26" lower and you only have 3 more treads (4 more risers) below it.

You've got a total of 18 risers, 16 treads plus 1 landing.
