I am looking for some recommendation on how to attach a paddle as mid rail in my cabin stairs. One hand has a nowel post and the other side there is a wall.
I was considering using a rod holder on the wall side but I run out of ideas on how to connect the paddle to the post.
many suggestion? Thanks9F62CD86-4E6B-4CAD-BCC6-751D397F1B67.jpeg5597E278-9D14-4A6F-BEEA-E23DBF04CF4C.jpegB64F6198-7AEB-4ACB-AA2C-F54E7B663758.jpeg9F49FB2D-B0A4-4A85-93FD-723D5257B9D5.jpeg88A8A032-CEE6-4495-99A2-A942FE9F5F84.jpeg

You could go simple and just use a piece of flat bar drilled for screw holes (appropriate number) and bent to match the angle. You could go fancier and form something to match the curvature of the paddle which would then probably be welded to a piece of flat bar with holes drilled in it to attach to the newel post. You could go further with that and make a contoured pocket for the paddle to sit it. I would just make sure that you really spread the load from the bracket to the paddle end as it's thin wood.

instead of hiding the attachment, highlight it.

Find the biggest lag bolt you can, cut the head off, slot the upper unthreaded shank to accept the paddle.

Attach your lag to post, then use a set screw through the slotted upper shank to hold the paddle.

Or

Run a block vertically on the post just under the paddle, drill a hole through paddle above block, attach with a bolt/screw vertically down into the block.

I went with the simple route. One long structural screw on one side and wood screws on the paddle side. Very rustic but it works for now
