I have hit a snag in my plan where the county is wanting the upstairs space to have a separate ingress/egress point then the garage. Stairs on the outside does not really fit the site or plan. (I wish it did, these things waste so much space inside)

I really see two options, as is or remove the landing and use the far wall all the way up. Anyone have suggestions for options 3 - ??? or comments on the first two?

shooting from the hip here but...

Your landing to which the "6'-10" -->" arrow points.
Could you do a short set of stairs outside that led up to an elevated entryway at that landing and have that pass? It would seem to be a very small amount of exterior fuss (compared to a full set outside that go all the way up.) And depending on the layout of the lot, it might be a minimum visual impact, since it's at the back of the building.

Keep coming up with ideas; one will work. Good luck. Post pics as it develops.

I would shoot the stairs straight up the long wall where you have them starting. Enclose them completely and they will disappear. You have to remember there is a lot of room for built in storage and even work benches under them. Air compressors, heating units or even a bathroom could be stuffed under there. :) Not a bad thing when you consider that stuff takes up floor space either way.

ChevyEFI, great idea - I would never had thought of that! I am running that one by the GC, and drawing up the two alternatives.

I will post back with pics on the end result.

If you do part inside and part outside stairs, you will need complying landings at the door way. The code reads 3' beyond the swing of the door for the landing that has the door swing out on to. The man door will likely need to be moved or the stairs run straight out.

What Zeke says on landing . . . . same issue applies that only can have so many ft of steps without a landing (think it's 10 or 12 ft ??), so you couldn't have a giant 16 ft long string of steps on the exterior.

What about a small slidng door in corner, in lieu of a swing door?? Sliding glass door would give you some natural light.
