So our house is a split foyer, 6 steps up....6 down. We are debating about adding stairwell lighting. Not sure if we want to do just 2 lights on the landing or a few on each section of steps. Definitely dont want one for each step. Anyone have any recommendations for the lights themselves. Hoping to use 5000k for the color as that is what we have throughout the house.

Not sure how many to use or how many would be to over powering.

This is the lighting with one roughly every other step. It's a pre-fab kit so I didn't have control over the spacing. The amount of lighting is perfectly fine with me.

Do you want to illuminate the areas at the top and bottom of the stairs? Or do you just want to illuminate the actual steps like Dustball has shown in order to get light in the stairwell?

We would be fine with just doing the stairs. Or doing the landing you come through from the entry door. Not sire about both.

Not concerned about the very top of the stairs or the very bottom

Consider handrail lighting, too. It would be a lot softer and more even that what Dustball shows. You could probably DIY pretty easily: just remove the handrail, rout a groove in the bottom and hide some rope light in there. Probably way easier to install than six or eight individual lamps.

You really want general light over a stair -- unless done correctly side lighting can create lots of shadows ....

That's why you don't see exterior steps done with them to the degree they once were.
