Stand-Mounted LED Work Light Recommendations

Alright everyone,

Just started what will be the major renovation of an over 100yr old home and I need new work lights that won't cook me while working in the smaller rooms.

The heat coming off the 500W halogen ones I have is just too much indoors, so I'm looking for a GJ masses-approved LED equivalent. I've been reading a lot about how some LED models can't throw light like the halogen ones.

I have plenty of flashlights and headlamps for the small stuff.

Please share all of your opinions, good or bad and yes- the stand is a must since I have a lot of overhead work to do.

This is a no brainer - Costco has "snap on" licensed LED flood lights. They are 2000 lumens, for $39 (or less is still on sale). They are bright as hell, and run extremely cool, drawing about 20 watts if I remember.. Only thing is they come with a short stand, BUT you can buy a $20 halogen lamp from Home Depot just for the tripod, and have a serious work light.. I have 3 of the snap on's.. One of the 2000 lumens, 2 of the older 1600 lumens I used for work at night to set telephone poles in the dark.. They are by far, the best bang for your buck..

I agree. The Snap-on lights are the bomb. I have 2 of the older 1600's on an old double halogen work light stand. I threw the old halogens away. I also have one I use portable with the factory short stand.

I liked them SO much I bought 6 more of the 2000 this year and am giving 4 of them away for Christmas gifts, the other 2 are for me to put away in case I ever need them.

AWESOME LIGHTS for the money.

BTW, I bought 2 this year off Amazon and 4 off eBay as our local Costco didn't have them.....

You won't be disappointed if you get a one or two.!

Oh yea, they are not only bright but also very cool running.

Another plus is they run on only 25 watts (2000 lumen) or 30 watts (1600 lumen)

They will run on a small cigarette lighter power inverter.

Also, side by side comparison of my older 1600 model and the newer 2000 model I didn't notice much difference in brightness. I did notice that the older 1600 model was a blueish white light and the newer 2000 model was a little warmer and more natural color.

One thing I noticed is when mine is plugged in & not turned on, I can see the LEDs glow a bit in the dark. I thought mine was defective but my buddy has the same light & it does the same thing. No big deal, it's definitely worth the price & I'd buy it again.

This light is awesome. Its from stanley, i have 2 of these at my garage at home and i find reasons to use them. Good for the money and has some cool features.

There is also a 2700 lumen model.. Have seen it floating around online one before, but you won't find it at a price like Costco.. The same 1600 or 2000 lumen lights sell on eBay for $70-$90.. So it's impossible to ignore $40 at Costco.. U will want more that one, after you buy the first.. It's that good..

Edit - the 2000 lumen was on sale for $32.99 at Costco , not sure if it still is..

Snapon licensed doesn't mean anything good to me, way too much junk was sold in the last couple years.

Costco light looks fine, nothing wrong with the LED lights at Lowes or Home Depot.

Most light for the cheapest, put a CFL in a typical aluminum $8 reflector utility light with a clamp, the ones that look like a tin hat.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I probably won't be rushing out to get the 2000, I barely even use mine lately anymore. But the next time I'm at Costco & I run into it, I'm pretty sure I just may have to get it!

You really don't know what your missing.. Firstly, anything comparable to the output of the snap on is twice the price, even after you spend $20 just to get a tripod..

If you wanted to get creative though - Costco also has a 4' led shop light fixture in the store now, with 3700 lumens for $39.. You could always try to rig that onto a tripod, vertically I'd imagine, if you REALLY needed some cool lighting..

I saw some LED floods at SEMA on stands that were 5000 lumen and 2000-2500 or something battery lithium powered.

I have both the small and stand-mounted Husky units from Home Depot and they work well. I got tired of blowing bulbs on my halogen. The only thing they could improve upon is the LED color, which emit a blue-ish light.

I picked up a couple of the Snap On lights from Costco on sale for $29 each. They are nice!

Much nicer than my old ones which felt like heat lamps.

I don't know about folks down in the States, but I was in Costco today and they are selling the 2700 lumen model for $50CAD. They may already be popping up in American stores as well.

Update- I bought the 2000 lumen snap on and it is excellent.

The upgraded switch (from the 1600 model) has a flexible plastic dust cover, there is no blue glow when plugged in, it doesn't get warm at all and the output is tremendous.

While a small guard of some sort would be nice for the lens, I don't see it as such an oversight that it's a deal breaker.

Also the light itself is a cool white. Not halogen yellow or that odd blue generated by other LED's.

Quick update-

I purchased the 2000 lumen snap-on and it's very impressive in both output and temperature.

The light is way more white than the halogen, but seeing as most of my flashlights and headlamps are now as well, I don't mind it at all. There is almost no radiant heat from this light either. I left it on for an hour the day it arrived and it felt slightly warmer than room temperature.

Also- I picked up one of the Ryobi lights below from HD because it would run corded and on their 18V platform and it is almost as impressive as the snap on.

The Ryobi is a bit more expensive and has slightly less lumen output, but the ability to use it cordless is a huge plus, especially when the 4.0ah batteries were on sale for 85 in store. Doing it over, I would have just bought the ryobi light.

Either way I'm keeping the snap-on. It's an excellent light.
