Too bad they didn't learn about warranty from a good, respectable company. and offer a 7 year- 70,000 mile warranty... :evil: A lifetime warranty on anything without stipulations? I think that is nuts.. How many decades or centuries should one expect a lifetime warranty be honored?

Guess Sears had a Better Idea..

Not to leave anyone out, the Craftsman tool can be used on a GM product if the need should ever arise;)

Except you're not the customer, you bought it from the customer and the warrenty is probably meant to be written for the customer. Thinking you deserve the warrenty cause you paid 50 cents for someone's broken pos is the essence of self entitlement and an abuse of the warrenty regardless of how its written. Its probably kept open to create the least amount of difficulty for the real customers in the hopes that the dishonest won't abuse it too badly. How people don't see it as fraud is the part that always amazes me but then millenials had to learn their supposed sense of entitlement from somewhere.

The Warrantee is up to the retailer to offer and honor. It is real clear you don't have to be the original owner. I know you want to write the rules for Craftsman but you don't! If the warrantee is not working for them, they can change it any time they choose. :beer:

We have to agree that it is their warranty; it is liberal, and it says what it says..

Is it possible that it is less costly for Craftsman to swap out a broken tool than to process a bunch of paper work for warranties? And, the warranty, I believe, helps to keep the brand alive.

Myself, I think a lifetime warranty is a bit nuts, and would be satisfied with a 5 or 10 year warranty on a tool.

YOU don't know what Sears intended, which is why you used the word "probably".

Be assured that a corporation as large as Sears has lawyers on retainer. Sears' lawyers know what Sears intended, and you've been shown how the lawyers have worded the warranty terms. Lawyers do not write generous and liberal warranty terms unless specifically instructed to do so.

The warranty keeps retail and resale prices higher than they would be otherwise. This is a legitimate reason for a person to purchase one tool brand over another. It's a legitimate reason to ask--or pay--more for the tool on the second-hand market. That the second--or third--or fifteenth owner receives warranty benefit is no concern of yours.

It's not that simple. Tools sold with the Sears "Satisfaction" warranty must be warrantied by Sears under the terms in place when the tool was sold. If the warranty has changed since I bought my ratchet in '73, that ratchet should be warrantied under the warranty terms in effect in '73, not the altered/updated terms in effect today. This is one reason companies put date codes on products.

Obviously, if Sears goes TU, the Sears warranty is toast. SBD will probably be forced to honor it; or (at minimum) to honor some "updated" warranty on the Sears-purchased tools as long as they keep the Craftsman name. I suspect that there's five or ten or thirty pages of contractual obligations in the official licensing paperwork that deals with warranty claims; and I also suspect that we mere mortals will never be privy to the exact terms. We'll find out soon enough how the contractual obligations are handled in "the real world".

I admit I'm in the camp that it's not right to buy a broken tool from someone and take it to Sears expecting a brand new tool.

As stated by others, Sears is very aware of people doing just that, but advertising the "no hassle" warranty more than pays for the few that take advantage of it, so they allow it....

If it becomes more of an issue, i'm sure they will reword the warranty.

I'll go one step further, I'll agree that Sears would want to warranty a broken tool to someone who purchased a broken tool from a yard sale, to have the chance for that person to USE THE TOOL and hopefully like it enough they will purchase more from Sears later....

The bad apples in my opinion are the ones that get the warranty tool and put it up on Ebay simply for profit....

If your moral compass tells you to not return a broken Craftsman tool because you think it is too old or you bought is used. I don't judge anyone for that. But why are you judging others for exercising their legal right?

It's slowing down as we wait/investigate what will actually happen with Stanley B&D and the Craftsman products they come out with.

After everything plays out,I wish everyone would go back and look at some of their comments and realize how silly some are:)

I think it is pretty much inevitable Sears will fade away eventually or get chopped into smaller subsidiaries... They are just holding out for other conglomerates to buy their brands... only Kenmore & Diehard left to cash-in on...

Sad thing the CEO is making out like a bandit while all the regular employees are taking it up the pooper...

Typical GJ thread with some of the best entertainment on the internet. I seldom come on here without getting a good laugh. Topics get hashed over from every angle, stories are told, ideas and thoughts are exchanged. I enjoy reading what GJ Members have to say.. There are plenty of threads to choose from.

GJ may not be perfect, but it gets a :thumbup: from Me

I love my Harbor Freight 44". It is the greatest thing since sliced bread. There has never been a better tool cabinet set. It was the bargain of the century. I combined 96 coupons and got it almost free. It was.......
Out of almost 500 posts, this is the most lucid...

2 options for Craftsman Industrial...

It gets axed so as to not compete with Proto.

It becomes a rebadged proto line for a similar price. Gives them significant name recognition and many of the current purchasers of CI stick with it, just now buying Proto under the CI label.

I still think regular ol' craftsman is going to replace blackhawk. Only place where it fits into SBD's tool line up. They have a professional auto tech line that is well known (Mac), professional Industrial line up with good name recognition (Proto), several cheap imported lines (Stanley, Bositich, and probably one more I can't remember, Stanley actually has several levels of quality within it too depending on who is selling them).

Blackhawk is the budget USA line, but no one outside of this forum has ever heard of it. Hell, even in a lot of SBD's literature when they say what brands they own, Blackhawk is never mentioned. It also is just crammed into a random corner of the Proto website with a catalog that is nearly impossible to find and almost no advertising for it. Start stamping blackhawk tools with Craftsman and people will by it up.

You know, I just realized Craftsman Club is still advertising sales but they also advertise sales at Ace Hardware. Maybe the tools department at Sears will vanish sometime at the end of March 2017. I wonder what will happen to all of the Craftsman tools the have in stock at Sears?

I doubt it but with this Hedge Fund guy running Sears Holding who knows. They claim to be doing what is right for the shareholders but just do what is best for their pocket book with little to no regard for anyone else.

I used to see Black Hawk tools at some of the independent auto part stores I frequented. I have not seen them in some time. I assumed they were absorbed by some other company or went belly up.

Ah, the hair splitting semantics of morality. First, customer is my choice of words, it's not mentioned in the Craftsman warranty. Still, it makes sense in the sense that a customer is a person who makes an exchange for something from someone who is in the business of selling. If we say the customer must exchange only cash for that something then customer is an inappropriate term. But the exchange is made with whatever the seller agrees to. Cash, check, credit card, gift card, broken tool, whatever the seller thinks is fair.

My moral position on this is simple. If Sears is OK with their warranty policy, I'm OK with it.

If you want to make the fight against Craftsman warranty "abuse" a Righteous Moral Cause on the order of abolitionism or prohibitionism, feel free. But I think you're wasting your zeal trying to save us sinners and excusers from our moral inferno. I suggest you email Eddie Lampert right now. Immediately.

Started making tools just after WWI, sold to New Britain in 1955, hand-tool division of Blackhawk acquired by Stanley along with Husky when New Britain folded. The hydraulic equipment segment of Blackhawk was retained by the original company.

I am mentally making a list of tools that I might want to pickup in the next few months (1/4" thru-handle spinner, metric long pattern DBE) before Stanley decides they can make them even cheaper.

Haven't read through this whole thing yet but I had to comment on the Eddie Lampert quotes I've seen. I was a salesman, tool department manager and tech during my time with Sears. I always thought the direction he's talking about taking the company is the worst part of their business model. Catering to the most worthless people that only walk through the doors because they know if they put their hands out and complain enough they'll get whatever they want. It's a vicious cycle that's left them screwing employees and providing subpar service and products. This has driven out good customers and employees which perpetuates their reliance on the leeches they call customers.
Sorry for the rant but it hurts my brain to see such a commitment to failure.

You know, I have a set of USA made Craftsman Inductrial tools I have been assembling over the years. I asked a CI sales rep what the word is on the CI line and he said he has not heard an official word on what SB&D is going to do. Why would the Armstrong brand be dropped after being around over 100 years?

You know, I have been wondering what will become of Armstrong. Does anyone know who has the rights to the Armstrong line? Will the line vanish all together and never be heard of again?

ESL is a hedge fund company. He used ESL money to prop up Sears. Isn't he taking people investment to support a dieing corporation. Wouldn't the investors loose money? Isn't that illegal?
