Richard explained it to me a while back:
Jon Trusty Senior created the dead blow hammer back in the 1970s, using his proprietary polyurethane formula and his designs for the hammers. His company was very successful, and Stanley purchased the company in the early 1980s. When the non-compete ran out in the early 1990s, Trusty-Cook opened with reengineered versions of the original dead blow hammers.
I've played with the Stanleys at a local Tool supply shop and I found the finishing on them to be terrible. It's like a Trusty-Cook where the casting line will cut your finger off.

I have them, they work great as a dead blow hammer, as always it never crossed my mind that I should be critiquing the finish until I saw it here.
