Hi, i am putting back together a model 286 stanley bench grinder. The problem is the wave washer has a 1/2in washer attached to it and will not go over the 9/16in bearing id part of shaft which leaves a space as in pic. And there is only 1 wave washer. This was taken apart before, maybe the previous owner changed somthing. hope this is clear. thanks, joe

Those look like extended race bearings---are they installed the correct way? I have the Atlas version of that grinder and don't recall the bearings looking like that.

no,normal bearings. the shaft center is 1in, then 5/8,then 9/16, then 1/2in. the bearing id=9/16 you can see on the first pic that the 9/16 area is longer then the width of the bearing so a little bit sticks past i. the compression washer has a 1/2in id washer attached to it keeping it from going on the 9/16in part of shaft and against the bearing. this makes no sense to me

You are missing a piece. There should be a T shaped sleeve between the belleville washer and the bearing. The smaller OD end of the sleeve contacts the inner race and the larger OD end contacts the belleville washer.

thanks for the info, so starting from the inside edge of shaft there is a flat washer then bearing then t-shaped sleeve then belleville washer. so the compression(wave washer shown in pic is not original? Is this set up on both sides of shaft? and this t-sleeve be made from a bronze flange bushing? thanks, joe
also what are the set screws at the end of each end bell for, it lookes like they would be used to lock in place the bearings?
