In 1909, Stanley (whether Stanley Works or Stanley Rule & Level is unclear, but see below) acquired J.S. Fray Company of Bridgeport CT. Included in the purchase was the patent for a Hollow Handled Tool set which Stanley continued to manufacture. This Hollow Handled Tool Set bears the Stanley Rule & Level name on the nickel plated (I assume) ferrule. The chuck uses a winged nut to hold the several tools in place. In later years a more typical chuck was used.

Compared to modern-day combination tools the quality is very high and the turned wood handle bears evidence of considerable use. The threads on end-cap and body are almost flawless. The individual tools show no evidence of abuse.

The Combination Tool, if that is what it was called, wasn’t found in any of the catalogs available on the International Tool Catalog Library, but one soon grows squinty-eyed paging through those tomes. Stanley Works acquired The Stanley Rule & Level Company in 1920 and renamed it as The Stanley Tools Division in 1937 we assume (never a good thing to do, do so nonetheless) therefore that the Tool was produced in 1937 or earlier.

Any contrary or supporting information would be accepted.
