Hello,
I'm trying to determine the date of this Stanley No. 5 and I think all I've done is confuse myself.
Patent under lever cap is 1018750
Kidney shaped hole
Marked STANLEY
Market No. 5
Marked Made in U.S.A.
Possibly Rosewood Handle and knob
Smooth Sole is approximately 14"

Can you help? Many thanks. Stanlet-No-5-22-Plane.jpgStanlet-No-5-33-Plane.jpgStanlet-No-5-44-Plane.jpgStanlet-No-5-55-Plane.jpgStanlet-No-5--77-Plane.jpgStanlet-No-5-Plane.jpg

Thanks for that link. I have that site and it's filled with information, but that's also what has me confused. And, I've probably now confused the group. I removed the last photo which was a different plane.
On this site, https://sawmillcreek.org/archive/index.php/t-225443.html the Patent No. 1018750 refers to a Bailey. It's the top paragraph.
On the link that you sent, I clicked on the link Stanley Type 5 and it linked to

Stanley Bailey Type 5 Hand Plane (1885-1888)

No where does it say Bailey on my plane. And, then the Made in U.S.A. is another question.

Sorry don't have time to go through chart now.

Just wanted to add that sometimes you find these with mixed and matched parts. In at least one of mine the body, lateral adjustment, lever cap didn't add up to being from the same source. So if you're finding conflicting info that may be why. If that's the case and go to sell just describe it as such, ie 1910s body w 1940s lever cap, it won't be a big deal.

I hang out in woodworking forums and in the buy sell trade section fixer upper planes without significant problems sell for $30-50, fully rehabbed, sharp, ready to use planes maybe double that.

I have always found this site easier to use in terms of determining Stanley Bailey hand planes types. Also it's a useful site in terms of seeing when and what changed from type to type.

PossumDog.... your comment was interesting because after I posted and was tinkering around, I thought I wonder if this was a marriage? So, I might not have been crazy after all reading your response. Many thanks.

Your plane has a kidney shaped hole for the lever clamp so it is a Type 16, or later. You need to check the markings on the lateral adjustment lever to narrow it down further.

I'm guessing a non-Stanley sole with Stanley parts added on top. A frankenplane as it were. If it works, don't sweat it. If trying to sell, be up front about it.
