Hi all

I picked up a Stanley Bailey No8 plane today at a good price.

It is missing the blade and locking plate, if those are the right terms for the parts.

does anyone know a source for these parts used?
hoping to find one of those guys who collects these and might have some parts from
a hangar queen...

Nice! I need a No 8...someday. Believe that the blades are interchangeable with any number of other jacks. I'd keep on the look out for a parts plane for a few bucks and rob it for what you need. Buying a new blade will set you back more than it needs to.

I don't think they are completely interchangeable...
I have a smaller one, and the blade lock and blade on it are too small to reach down to the slot in the base.

The "blade" is actually called a plane iron.

Attached to the plane iron by means of a screw is the cap iron.

The plane iron and cap iron assembly is held in the plane by the cap.

So, the parts you probably need are the plane iron, cap iron, and cap.

If the screw that the cap fits into on the frog (the part the plane iron and cap iron assembly sits on) is missing, then you need a "cap screw" too.

Some of the different-numbered Stanley planes do share the same size of plane iron and associated parts, but the No. 8 isn't one of them. It's the only one that uses a 2-5/8" wide plane iron, cap iron and cap.

Thanks guys!

I'll check out the links sent-

And WWIIjeep = you are correct.
I have need of everything except the cap screw. That is still there, but the other three parts are gone.

I suspect the size difference between this and other planes is the exact reason
why these parts were never replaced by the owner.

That, and there's probably lots more planes without the plane and cap iron out there than there are cap and plane iron parts laying around,
considering the size of them.
Much more likely to lose the irons than the entire plane ;-)

Try contacting Jim Bode at jimbodetools.com. He will probably be able to hook you up. A Hock replacement iron and cap would be a sweet upgrade too.

The No. 8 is wider than the rest. The iron is interchangeable with a No. 4 1/2.

I have a No. 6, No.7 and No. 8 and the No.8 is a different animal. The added weight significantly works in your favor. However, it also takes more effort to push through.

Buy a replacement iron such as a Hock or Lie-Nielsen; you might have to file the throat a bit because these irons are much thicker than the Stanley originals.

Also, learn about the importance of honing and get one of those beeswax stick to lubricate the sole.

You will love that monster!
