Hey Guys,

I wanted to share my latest score, and seek some additional information on it.

Its a Stanley 1HP 220V grinder.

I know it's missing some parts, but it was $10 from a high school sale.
I tested it out and it runs nice and smooth. It is a beast.

Rough idea of year made? I believe late 40s but I could be way wrong. It doesnt have the rests the come out of the base normal to stanley grinders.

Does anyone know if the base is original?

I need a new switch, what would be correct for this sort of thing?

I also need a new long bolt that holds the housings together, anyone know where to get something like that?

Here is is next to my Delta Rockwell 1/2HP that I cleaned up.

The reason it doesn't have the rests that come out of the base is because it's older than late 40s. It's somewhere between mid 30s and early 40s, before they switched the tool rests on the 10" grinder to the same style as the 7" grinders.

The tool rest on the left is original. The one on the right is home-made.

Yes, the pedestal is a Stanley model GA-68.

The grinder is an early model 610 10" bench grinder.

The two parts together were sold as a model 1610 pedestal grinder.

Nice score.

Like Zeke said, toggle switch and all-thread. It did use a regular switch plate like that too, but with a round hole for a toggle switch instead of a rectangular hole for a light switch.

Through bolts for the motor housing should be an easy find at any electric motor repair shop.

As for your "score,"

You = 1
Us = 0

Now just put some real 10" wheels on it and you be da man.

(Can you tell I'm jealous?)

Great score.

HS shop tools are great finds, high quality, heavy duty, and usually lightly used; not like a production shop.

Yup, Suckage is definitely deserved!

I'd say that is probably the right color. I don't see any other color where the paint is chipped off. We had the same grinders at work. It is made for a bigger grinding wheel. Probably about 2". The holes at the top of the opening are made for screws that hold an adjustable safety glass (about 4"x4") to keep the particles away from your face. I would say that is the original stand, too. Nice buy.

Let me be the first to say for $10...nice score but YOU ****!!:thumbup:

SECONDED!!!

That's freakin' HUGE for $10....

That's the second or third time I've heard of "high school sales"
And most of them have been "you ****" kind of deals...

Wish I'd run into a few of those around here...

I agree - check a motor shop, Even an out of town one if you don't have a local one should ship something that light.

Seems like I remember seeing some sort of brass thread on cap for finish work
back in the day, which in this case could go on one end of threaded rod to look
more like the proper bolt, if you can't find the proper one.

I will be buying bigger wheels, 2x10 most likely. I need to build new rests first.

I seriously doubt you're going to be able to fit 2" wide wheels on that grinder. For two reasons. 1. the arbor probably isn't long enough. 2. there's probably not enough space inside the wheel guards.

They were made for 1" wide wheels. You might be able to fit 1-1/2" wide wheels on it, but that's about it.
