Hi,
I purchased a Stanley 4 1/2 plane without any patent dates. The lever has the Stanley name on backward. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Thanks

Maybe I watched too much of the Little Rascals as a kid, but what backwards printing? Hold it in your hand in operators position and look at it...

How does it do planning the wood? Does the blade keep an edge and it stay at the proper depth?

^ this.

But if even if you only bought the tool as a conversation piece, I can't see anything wrong or amiss in your photo. If you hold the plane as if to use it, the STANLEY name is spelled vertically, facing the operator.

Vertical spelling was quite common in the '20s through '50s, like the tall permanent name and/or city signs that adorned the fronts of art deco era movie theaters.

"NORTHWICK" spelled vertically:

"CHICAGO" spelled vertically:

"LAURELHURST" spelled vertically:

This would only apply if you were using the plane on your ceiling!
