I don't think it's as simple as being traffic based.It is actually done automatic based on traffic to a page. For any item, if there is a lot of traffic and/or purchasing of an item, the price will adjust. For this reason Amazon deals are very short lived. And yes it is intentional, I read an article about it a while back.

There have been times where I will track an item for a month. The price drops and drops and drops. I place an order and within an hour it jumps back to full retail. The whole time it will say something like "4 in stock" until I place the order, with the price jumping back when only 3 in stock.
