Has there been a post in the past about how / why amazon does this with pricing?
It's automatic. Maybe it's done with tools that sit on the shelf for too long. Maybe it's done when an item is in too many carts and wishlists before being bought. Maybe it's random, maybe it's intentional, hard to say.

It is actually done automatic based on traffic to a page. For any item, if there is a lot of traffic and/or purchasing of an item, the price will adjust. For this reason Amazon deals are very short lived. And yes it is intentional, I read an article about it a while back.

I don't think it's as simple as being traffic based.

There have been times where I will track an item for a month. The price drops and drops and drops. I place an order and within an hour it jumps back to full retail. The whole time it will say something like "4 in stock" until I place the order, with the price jumping back when only 3 in stock.

Could be. I will see if I can find the article I read. I have had similar things happen, such as you said above. Whatever it is though, is definitely intentional.
