We had these at the machine shop I worked at. They are great, industrial duty cabinets, similar to Lista. I wouldn't hesitate to pick some up at the right price.

They're built like tanks. I keep an eye out for them on craigslist but haven't seen one I want yet at the right price.

I picked up three of them for a really good deal, kept two and gave the third to my brother. I attached a picture. Prior to this I had 3 gorilla shelves from costco and even though they were nice the vidmar's definitely cleaned the room up by keeping everything out of sight. The one on the right has a lot of my small parts, hardware, and misc. jeep parts. The one on the left comes in particularly handy because it contains all of my specialty tools that come in the big plastic boxes. Another nice feature is that it keeps most of my valuable tools out of sight from street viewers.

Other comparable cabinets are Lista, and equipto. and be warned these things are heavy, I think the one on the right weights around 300lbs, at least that's what it felt like.

I converted on into a rolling tool box. Absolutely great quality. Would like to buy a wall of them to use, but it would get expensive. Great product.

Ive got a few and love them. Whenever I see the tall ones for <$500, or the short ones for <$300 I buy them and have never regretted it. I have one with latching drawers on a cart as my mobile box. Its very nice to have good solid cabinets you dont have to worry about hurting to hold your tools.

My take on them:

ours do not have any latches or detents or anything. Makes them dangerous to move as all the drawers full of 1" impact sockets swing out at once, and try to tip. This was the experience last wednesday.

Speaking of moving them, they are a royal pain in the *** to move. No casters, high center of gravity, and no fork lift rails.

THIS IS NOT TRUE WITH ALL VIDMAR CABINETS

They can be configured in many ways, or could be modified by the end user. In our case, this was just the experience. Played hell trying to get them safely on the forks and moved around the shop. Even tougher to get them set in their final place against the wall. Had to bat them around with the forks. That is actually a positive note, as a lesser box would never survived being smacked and pushed and dragged across the floor. Then again, if they were a bit more mobile, none of that would have been necessary.

Moving them is probably a once in 5 year event, BUT not a pleasant experience.

I have a couple, and love them. Very strong. Somewhere there's a video of me standing in the top drawer.

Had those on the ship I spent 5 1/2 years of my life on. We had one drawer, that was 24" X 36" and 6" deep, packed to the top with combination wrenches, couple hundred pounds in that drawer easy and it still worked smooth as hell with no sagging. If I EVER come across one in my price range I'll jump on it no matter how beat up and bashed it may be, those things are pretty damn indestructible for the most part IMO.

I have a Lista, Vidmar, Stanley Vidmar, and a no name. The no name is ok, but the others are great. I have the Lista and Vidmar side by side in my showroom and they are sweet.. Smooth, will hold lots of weight. Very heavy.

I would buy any I find of the tall ones for $500 to $600 in good shape. Unfortunatley the usually go for $700 and up.

I believe thats what our local caterpillar road service guys use in their box trucks, I wish my company would spring for them but seeing how the shelving and divider in my service van is made of plastic, Im thinking I shouldnt hold my breath.

I doubt they will put them in a van. Each cabinet does weigh about 300lbs empty. You gas mileage will go out the door and forget the suspension.

Hi there fatfillup!
Do you think you could post a photo of your Lista cabinet? I'd love to share it with our Facebook followers.

I have 4 of the Vidmar boxes. I prefer the Lista (better looking) and the older Lyon (sturdier, I think) but the Vidmar are a close 3rd. Well worth buying when Uncle Sam (or anyone else) is done with them.

I'm hoping to pick up four of these cabinets at auction. Two eleven drawer, and two nine drawer....I have my fingers crossed!

I just saw some of these go for $600 each used yesterday afternoon. I fell out of the bidding about $300, but I have more boxes then is fair and just already.

I just watched an auction end where a nine drawer cabinet went for 880 dollars and the rest were in the 800 dollar range! That would pretty much eliminate me from buying and the drive to go pick it up!

Got all these for under $500. Granted all shelves as they had about 40 9-11drawer units but those got over 700ea so I was out. Was hoping for atleast one or two. But I can add drawers or doors or whatever to these as well as I get to it. However new drawers are pretty expensive themselves. Still come out cheaper than a new one though. All Std Depth. 2-155's (30") 3-340 (59") and 2 extra wide 340s (60"H x 60"W) Also got a fully welded Lyon cabinet on the back there, and a Dayton bench grinder in the bed too. I wish I could have/should have gotten more. Those two 155s no one bid on, $25/ea! Thinking about adding casters and handle and turning them into rollers. Well need drawers too.

They're the newer Stanley Vidmar. All in Great shape but I bent the top of that one wide one in the picture as the strap went across the middle and straping it down bent it down. Bone head move. Not sure how gonna get it pushed back up as its stout metal.

The old rule of thumb used to be $75/drawer used. But they often go for MUCH more than that. Sometimes less. I got my pair for $240, but I watched dozens go past me on Ebay before that happened.

Thats a good haul, if the holes line up you can (as you say) put drawers in them any time.

Yea I was in touch with a vidmar sales engineer and all the cabinet frames are the same and everything is interchangable. Which makes sense. However for new drawers, depending on how many, might have been better off getting a complete one. But I can spend a few grand over a few years instead of all at once upgrading mine.

Used them a lot at my last job, every machine had a cabinet next to it with your de-burr tools and hand tools and that sorta thing. Of course I worked for a Stanley division so they probably got them through an inside deal.

New place has them full of hardware, probably a few hundred pounds in the bigger drawers. I'd love some for my shop.

That was my plan for a few drawers was for hardware storage. Just got to find a good deal on some fasteners. Along with some of my less used case tools, probably the dewalt stuff I have. Anything that needs locking up. But I was also thinking of just getting a locking door for one of them and keeping the shelves.

Nah that was a industrial closing auction. Continental in Huntsville, AL. Got rid of quite a bit of stuff.
