I was thinking about bidding on some of these and noticed they are 450 - 800 lbs depending on the size of the cabinet. Would a couple of guys be able to load these into a pickup bed?

Also, do you guys have any preference between the three brands and if so what is that preference.

Looking forward to everyone's input.

When I picked up my Lista box, we had to take out the drawers and rails from the box. Afterward, 2 people can lift it up onto the bed. Maybe with a 3rd person, you wouldn't need to remove the drawers?

Pictures or Web Site reference????

I do not know what "these" are

Carl B.

They are all industrial storage solutions (cabinets, toolboxes, workbenches, etc.) I believe they're all pretty expensive if purchased new but they can often be found at auction for a reasonable price and are used in the military and many other industrial applications.

I have all three. The Lista are my favorite in terms of looks and drawer organization.

It depends ...do you have smart friends or dumb friends?

All kidding aside I've found that 400 pounds is a sensible limit for two guys to get into the back of a pickup truck, if you have four guys and are well coordinated 6-800 pounds might be possible.

Really though to be reasonably safe I like to have ramps and a come-along or a lift to mess with anything over about 500 pounds regardless of how many friends I have to help.

It's best to judge for yourself though, if it doesn't feel safe stop and find a safe way to do it, having 800 pounds of cabinet fall on you can really ruin your day. :)

If you can manage to get it on a pallet, a pallet jack can be rented from a tool rental shop and save you a lot of sweat. I've done this with engines/transmissions.

I have some smart friends and some dumb friends. I guess only the dumb ones would actually be willing to go with me to move 400 lb cabinets. If they were smart they would know better than to agree to this work in the heat we've been seeing here in Oklahoma.

If you are picking up at Tinker (its actually just S of Tinker) they will load them with a fork lift. They can drop it on the tailgate (area) and push it in with a spare palate.

Now you just need to get it out. They Lyon's are the heaviest. Lista and Vidmar; two men can unload together after taking out the drawers, the carriages, and the carriage support rails. Striped like this a Vimar and a Lista are probably down to 250lbs or less. My older Lyons stay over 300lbs.

400lbs+ is the starting for the 30x30 boxes. The tall ones, and the 30x60 ones are heavier still.

All of these are great boxes, but out-of-state machine tool dealers are going to bid them all up to $800 - fair warning.

Yojinbo,

WTF?? Are the out of state tool dealers paying for shipping on these heavy cabinets?? I can't imagine they can make much money off of them after paying the shipping?? I wondered who in the hell was bidding up those cabinets, now I know!

Well,

Based on what I have seen when picking up by Tinker a lot of them leave OK in normal commercial freight van trucks. OKC is a major semi crossroads and lots of carriers deadhead out of there West and East depending on the season.

Breaking them out into smaller 1-box-lots favors us little guys IMO but the $500 stuff for a 30x30x30 toolbox is too much for me.

I was going to snipe (the 15 min delay makes real sniping not possible at Gov Liquidations) a banged up old Lyon wide box. I was willing to go $210. That box sold N of $350 and the top drawer was too banged up to close.

I did not see any go for $800 per my prediction so it was a bit better then I thought.

I am in SoCal and I went out to look at a few Lista boxes the other weekend.

The guy had :

28x28x57 tall, 13 drawer $450
28x28x57 tall, 12 drawer $475
28x28x57 tall, 7 drawer $475
28x56x39 tall, 8 drawer, $695

All were in fair - good condition. He had bought them at auction and had them jammed into his tool shop.

He probably paid, maybe half what he's offering them for?

I was watching quite a few of them in Salt Lake City...they all went for stupid high money!

Yojinbo....I lived in Norman for several years...loved the fishing, hated the humidity. I much prefer the summers here in Wyoming!

I bought 3 vidmar cabinets, a 9 drawer, a 5 drawer, and a 6 drawer. The 9 drawer was a real pain and we needed to take the drawers out but the 5 and 6 drawer was doable with the drawers in. It was still heavy and I would recommend taking the drawers out of them and get a third friend. We loaded all three in my Tundra with the last one hanging out on the tailgate. I paid $150 for each one, I got a really good deal so I really had to make it fit on my truck because I wasn't leaving without them.

Never been to that site, but at larger auctions, the serious guys bring their own trucks/trailers. Sometimes they go home empty, sometimes light and sometimes they have to call for commercial freight backup.

They all tell me, "You make your money on the buy. If it's an out-of-town auction, never pay more than 1/3 of what you plan to sell it for. If you pay 1/2, then your travel expenses, cleaning, overhead and your profit's gone before you get it on your shop floor."

I've been trying down here on CL for over 2 years. Only one has come up for 300 and was gone in 1/2 day. They are scarce.

From time to time they clear lots of them out up by St. Pete's at Government Liquidations. They always look rusty to me - but that might scare away the faint of heart.

I have Lista (Swiss made) and Lyon and like the list better. They are decades old and work well and are bullet proof. Put casters on it because there not too mobile...

I prefer the Vidmar cabinets as they are a built a bit heavier IMHO. With each of mine, we used the frontend loader to load/unload them. Empty without drawers its tough for two strong men to walk the taller versions across a concrete floor. Normally I bid on them when they get below $500, and I must say my dream box is a Vidmar roller cab.

I have both a vidmar and a lista cab. I'll agree that the vidmar is a bit heavier duty but that's also like saying vidmar's tank weighs a bit more. The lista is no slouch by any means. I'd be glad to have another one of either.
