Just got my first Starrett vise recently, (thanks to Kevin Scott) but have been thinking about this stand for a couple years.
Some design thoughts are that it has a modern flair to it and has retractable wheels for moving.
Here is a 3 view concept sketch with the base cut from a tank head and the column fabbed from a light pole.

Here is sketch of the column cross section.
It matches the foot print of the vise, after radiusing the back of the vise base plate.

The column was fabbed from a segment of the light pole, a segment of 3" pipe and a a couple flat bar cheek pieces.
Here is the 3" pipe segment tacked off to the flat bar.

Scribing in the fit up of the fenders.
They are cut from 4" tube turns.

Bottom ring welded out, column welded out on the back side and column coupon welded back in.
I put the coupon back in, so the column can be filled with steel punchings for ballast.

One more pic with lever/tiller extended for moving.
This will function some what like a 1 handled, 2 wheeled wheel barrow.

Next up, prep for paint.
I'm thinking a grey base with a blue pearl top coat.
If I can get it to come out anywhere close to this pic, I would be really be tickled

Very nice concept and execution on that one Royce. I love the way you handled the retractable landing gear challenge. The single jack screw at easy use height is an excellent solution. Also the bump outs for the wheels are necessary and add a lot of style. Great use of your scrap pile. Ed.

So many well thought out and executed aspects to this stand! Impressive, but not surprising from you! Well done!

Very nice! Curious, do you create concepts based on what materials you have in inventory, or conceptualize and then find materials to work?

Jonshonda, it seems most of the time the design is based off the materials on hand.
On this project, the light pole was key because it was just the right diameter to match the vise base perfectly.

That stand is a work of art. I really like the post cross section that matches the vise base profile, the Starrett shaped ends on the bars, the hidden retractable wheels, the bulbous fenders, the tubes through the post. . . I just like everything about it!

I can't wait to see it in color. Gray with blue pearl is a great choice. I expect that the pearl will look especially good covering all the curves of the stand. It will be interesting to see how the pearl looks inside the tubes.

Royce, whenever I see a thread started by you it is a must read. I'm amazed at your creativity, design and execution. That is a really cool vise stand and I can't wait to see it painted and vise mounted. Well done...again! :pimpflash

That's what I figured and the exact reason I need more land so I can start to accumulate cool stuff for inspiration! That's what I will tell the wife!

Just WOW Royce. Wish we were neighbors. Really like how you tucked in the wheels and how the handles matches the vise. Do you use ends from Propane tanks? Another eye catching creation that is so useful in a working shop.

Got more vises when you are ready.

The tank head came from a hydronic heat expansion tank that I demolished off a job. Propane tanks would be a great source, too.
It would sure be a blast to be neighbors, we could conquer the iron and steel world!
