Hello.

I recently acquired a Starrett 925 vise a few months ago and I want to restore it. However, I am still trying to determine which color paint I need to use. The vise has been repainted once already and I suspect that the original color was blue. I would like to get as close to original as possible. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the original color was and what might be a good option for re-painting?

If anyone has any additional tips for me before I begin this project, I would certainly appreciate that as well. I have attached a photo of my vise also!

Thanks for looking!

From your photo the paint looks like it is in very good condition. I would just clean up the rust on the exposed metal surfaces, polish it up, wax, and use it. I do have a Starrett with the original paint on it if you would like to see what the original color looks like.

Maui, I agree and that's what I was initially going to do. But, when I started cleaning it, the carburetor cleaner I was using removed the paint rather easily and I ended up messing up the current paint job. I tried to be careful, but it just didn't work too well for me.

I have a 923 and it has original paint its like a metallic blue

This stock photo is pretty much the same

Thanks for the photo, DFB. I think this will be helpful moving forward.

Does anyone have any particular color or paint suggestions that work well? I was thinking about Rustoleum hammertone blue, but I'm not totally sure yet.

I have another question. Is there any way to determine the date of production for this vise?

Thanks for the help! That looks like a pretty close match.

Does anyone have any suggestions related to cleaning the old paint off? Would paint thinner be best?

I'd think you'd need to use a gel stripper to get all that old paint off, depending on whether the original finish is under that blue, maybe an aircraft paint stripper.
