So long as there is not alot of wear on the jaws or Groves where it might have been used on parts still moving or been dropped you got a smoking deal.

Starrett claipers for $38 is a good deal.
Looks like the dial has skipped a tooth or two...no big deal,if it comes with
the brass shim just put it between the gear rack and the back of the dial
and slowly roll the gear into the shim, it will let the needle move back to straight up..may take a few tries. Looks like a nice set of calipers!
congrats on the win!

Get some standards(or gauge blocks) and check how close it actually is. If its even close that's definitely a score especially for using in your home garage for weekend projects.

Those are good calipers. Looks like they're off by a couple of thousandths, but that's easily dealt with using the shim trick outlined above. On some of them you can actually just retime the gauge by twisting the bezel.

The setscrew on the bottom of the dial is for resetting zero, it holds the dial face in place. If you want to be fussy you can use the gear setting trick to get the pointer swung around to suit you, but is not really necessary.

Verifying with a gauge block is a good idea, but the real key is to make sure the rack and pinion don't have anything on them that will affect the use/accuracy. Clean is critical for calipers (Or any precision measuring equipment).

If you have to send it back it goes to Athol MA. I use to work for Starrett and they would come in and we would send them up to Athol

Id say there fine, the needle being off is just an adjustment for ease
of reading the dial straight up, it wont effect accuracy at all !
