Starrett Micrometer age

Hi everyone, a little background here, I'm a tool and die maker, and my wife's grandfather was also a tool and die maker. While helping my father in law sort out his garage, we found this Starrett 0 to 4" micrometer, that my father in law wanted to give to my son. I'd love to see if i can find an age for this micrometer, does anyone know how to date this tool? I will try emailing Starrett as well, but I can't seem to find any serial numbers on it.

Starrett made the same tools until something better came along. I'd guess your set is at least 100 years old.

I've got one in my basement workshop and it's handy for quick checks on parts.

Remembering back to the day, if you had one of those sets, you were considered a serious engine builder and shadetrees would bring their crankshafts by to get them checked to see if they could skate with just fresh bearings.

I have a 1" like that, that was left to me by Peter when he retired in 2001. So that style of mic was made for a while. It might not be 100 years old. I would look in the catalogue for sets in wooden boxes. That would give you an idea. Mine is in a Moore and Wright "eyeglass case" so I can't help you.

Is the "Starrett" on the lid a green background decal or is it ink stamped on?

I can't make out any Starrett on the lid, no sign of a decal at all, I suspect it would have been stamped and maybe faded.

My 1976 Starrett catalog lists the #224 micrometers looking identical to yours and says they come in a "fitted case". No indication if it is wood or plastic.

thanks, i emailed starrett and they asked me to send a few photos but basically said there is no way to date their tools since they were serial numbered.

The thimble is hard chrome plated so probably after WW2.
That finish was available before the war but only on a few models.

It likely pre 1946 because after that Starrett started including their circle R trademark sign next to their name. Checking that is a clue for WW2 tool collectors to make sure that the tools in their collections aren’t too modern. The first image shows the trademark on the box. The earlier box in the second picture is pre 1946.
